Welcome to week seven, everyone! 🌞 Read on for this week’s announcements, and a special furry introduction!

Remember, if you have news to share, please submit your news for future issues of SCling Wrap, cause we need your help keeping up with what’s ✨fresh✨ at USC Linguistics.

In the community 👥

Registration is now open for the LSA Linguistic Institute in Eugene, OR. We have over 80 courses by faculty from around the world, spread over two 2.5-week terms (July 7-22, and July 24-August 8th). Plus 8 exciting co-located conferences and workshops on topics ranging from Computation in Linguistics, to Usage-based Phonology, to Community-based Sociolinguistics, to Himalayan and Northwest American Indigenous Languages, as well as a variety of hands-on tutorials, advising opportunities, and reading groups.

USC Linguistics will be represented by faculty member Canaan Breiss, who will be teaching an advanced-level phonology course called “Phonology and the Lexicon” – check out the course description here. Canaan will also be leading a two-day conference titled “Abstract and Item-Specific Knowledge Across Domains and Frameworks”, co-organized with Gaja Jarosz (UMass Amherst), Emily Morgan (UC Davis), and Volya Kapatsinski (UOregon).

Check out the website for the Institute here: https://center.uoregon.edu/LSA/2025/

Pets of USC Linguistics 🐈🐈‍⬛

This week the featured pets of USC Linguistics are Max (black and brown stripes) and Bayes (grey and white patches), faculty member Canaan Breiss’ two cats! They’re both boys, about a year old, and best friends – they enjoy napping together, play-fighting together, and playing with dice, spring-toys, and boxes!
