Weekend Walkabouts: Devonport
Devonport, Auckland, NZ
This past weekend, Mac & I had a fun little day trip to nearby Devonport. This suburb is situated on Auckland’s north shore separated from the CBD by the harbour. You can take the long way around the harbour by going across the bridge and then down through Takapuna via car or bus, or you can take the 12 minute ferry ride! Mac and I opted for the latter and we enjoyed walking along the coast after getting off the ferry.
Devonport was used as the Naval Base for New Zealand in the mid-1800’s. In fact, the Royal New Zealand Navy still uses this area as its primary base.
Not ones to turn down a trek, we clambered up to the top of Mount Victoria – which is right near the middle of town – for some awesome 360 degree views of the area. Rangitoto Island was dramatic as ever on the horizon.
After getting our ‘view’ fix, we headed back down towards town – and had some fun using the slope of the road to take some tricky pictures!
Devonport’s downtown area is really well maintained and the main road is full of many different types of restaurants and cafes – something for everyone. There was even a vegetarian cafe where Mac & I split a delicious vegan ginger slice! If I ever find myself back in Devonport, I’ll sure be paying Zest Cafe another visit! Devonport was a fun place to spend a quiet Sunday morning and I can definitely see why its small-town charm is so appealing.
