Week6 | Tobi’s New Music Monster Picks
A totally random, whatever came to mind first, selection of the latest additions to our New Music Monster
Artist:
Daniel Feinberg Track:“The Strand”Following up on two previous releases this year, a remix of “The One with the Tickets” by Italian producer Bzur, and a cover of Swearin’ 2012 release ‘Movie Star’ (with Mel Yaris on Vocals + Bass), Daniel Feinberg returns with his first original material since his 2017 album, A Dream to Unwrap, with new single, “The Strand”. The lofi, laid back, Indie summer anthem was written, performed and produced by the Daniel himself, with Luxembourg based Producer, Tobi brought in to mix and master. “The Strand” represents the second collaboration between the unlikely pair, Tobi having previously remixed Daniel’s beautiful serenade, and most popular release to date, “Want You the Most” (released December, 2017). A highly musical blend of contrasting percussive elements and sweeping melodies, “The Strand” features Daniel’s trademark singalong vocals and the talented, multi-instrumentalist’s love of using a rich array of instruments in his unassuming, yet engaging arrangements. The creatively crafted reprise provides a fittingly aural delight for the listener, that tops of the song, both in terms of meaning and sound. “The Strand” is beers and barefoot in the grass ; lazing, hazy days and hanging with your friends ; BBQs and kites, blues skies and counting clouds.
Artist:
Swearin Track:“Grow into a Ghost”On-again, off-again, awesome noisemakers, the willfully haphazard, social media borderlined, Swearin are back with a tasty slice of saturated guitar fuzziness and indie rock alt grunge (pick a word), with new single, distortion at pace, “Grow into a Ghost” (released July 24th). A slamming, driving snare hit, punch-bounces the track throughout, providing much needed point of reference for the layers of overdriven, fuzzed and fused electric six strings to crank, wail, rocket and disintegrate in seemingly chaotic, but far from accidental, contrasting tones and complimentary musical shapes; a thick chocolate cake of amped bass amplitude, gained to the crunch, drag-drives the song from the ground up and up. Singer and guitarist, patchwork project leading, Allison Crutchfield’s voice speeds across the tone smacked asphalt instrumentation, lyrics lifting light on the breeze; but first grabbing traction with soulful tread and quiet snarl. “Grow into a Ghost” flatters to deceive with a crowd pleasing, playing to the cheap seats, array of guitar sonic treats, which belies a smartly produced, intuitively crafted piece of songwriting ; the track immediately bringing a smile to the face, with depth and noisy finesse to satisfy the appetites of repeat listeners.
Artist:
Millie Turner Track:“She was a Dancer” Attracting glowing praise from a string of heavy hitters across the Indieweb, for debut EP, Eyes on You; which drew together previous single releases, ‘Underwater’, ‘The Shadow’ and the quietly hypnotic, all conquering, 3 million streams and counting, title track, Eyes on You; plus so far unreleased fourth track, the sonicially delightful, engaging on the down low, “You and I” ; seventeen year old Millie Turner drops bit blunted, stripped back, percussive lofi oddity and pop odyssey, “She was a Dancer”. Lush brass phrases, drenched in reverb, shimmer within the synopation masterclass of beats, bits, snaps, claps and taps ; in absence of all but the barest minimum of melodic instrumentation, Millie’s vocal is free to sauter, sway, shift and swagger a bittersweet lyric, stepping gracefully around the count; ‘sung talked’ verses, laze compelling, off the back of the beat, instant singalong pre choruses, counter-rhythmic, and melodic centric choruses, draw the ear to listen and the heart to care. Millie’s voice having that rare quality, both accomplished and approachable, stunning, but never off putting ; she invites you to sing with her. Already playing on a host of Spotify’s local New Music Fridays (including the UK, Germany and Colombia), the strikingly mature and well judged, “She was a Dancer”, is set to propel this young superstar in waiting, to yet more dizzying heights.
