Waynesburg University Athletes of the Week
By S. Samek
Hammer Down Sports Blog would like to honor the following athletes for exceptional performances last week.
Women’s Athlete of the Week: Teghan Simonton – Women’s Cross Country

Sophomore runner Teghan Simonton and her Yellow Jacket teammates had a fantastic week. They competed in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Friday, Sept. 30, in which the Jackets swept the top five spots, winning by 30 points.
Simonton took first place in the race with a time of 19:17.87. This is Simonton’s first victory of her career.
Simonton was one of the top runners for a Jackets team who finished second in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference last season. At the Fisher Invitational last season, Simonton placed third behind two other Jacket runners, Julie Gerber and Elinore Loch. Then at the Bethany Invitational, Simonton was the first Jacket to cross the finish line, placing third overall at the meet.
Next up for Simonton and Waynesburg is the DeSales Invitational on Oct. 8.
Men’s Athlete of the Week: Brad Grinnen – Football

The Waynesburg University football team entered its game Saturday, Oct. 1, looking for the first victory of the season.
Waynesburg’s defense took matters into its own hands to see that the Yellow Jackets would defeat the Grove City 14-10. The defense contributed 11 tackles for loss, including eight sacks, while allowing a season low 10 points.
Junior linebackers Tristan Sandrosky and Brent Blacharczyk each contributed double digit tackles with 13 and 10, respectively, with two of the 23 going for a loss.
Junior defensive end Brad Grinnen continued to be a disruptive force for the Jackets this season on Saturday. The junior had seven tackles and three sacks in the win. Grinnen has contributed 31 tackles and seven sacks to accompany two forced fumbles through five games. Grinnen’s seven sacks are good for tops on the team.
Grinnen will lead the defense against Geneva on Saturday Oct. 8, in hopes for the Jackets’ second win of the season.
