Vivid 2016: Gondwana

Sydney June 2016 (12 photos)
This is Part 4 of my 8 part VIVID Sydney 2016 series.
In paleogeography, Gondwana (aka Gondwanaland), is the name given to an ancient supercontinent. Gondwana included most of the landmasses in today’s Southern Hemisphere, including Antarctica, South America, Africa, Madagascar, and the Australian continent, as well as the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian Subcontinent, which have now moved entirely into the Northern Hemisphere.
This year, Vivid returned to the suburban area of Chatswood and the light installations in this area took their inspiration from Gondwana, and the dinosaurs of that era. Only this Gondwana is a much more gentile and friendly place.

Primordial Pond by The Electric Canvas. As the fog clears and the light changes, giant eggs and reptilian creatures are revealed in the watery abyss. Who knows what else is hidden below?

Gondwana Light Lab by The Electric Canvas is a futuristic exploration of creatures from the Triassic southern supercontinent, Gondwana. We observe dinosaurs evolving from their origins in the depths of the ocean, then moving onto land, and ultimately climbing trees and escarpments from which they launch themselves into the air.

Stomping Ground by The Electric Canvas. An engaging projection in the middle of Chatswood Mall, Stomping Ground allows Vivid-goers of all ages to follow playful animations on the ground below their feet. The ground trembles as giant dinosaur footprints are etched into the floor of the Mall. Reptilian creatures dart amongst fern trees.

Need to get to the opposite side of the river? Fortunately, this river was easy to jump across, even for me. 🙂

Opposites: Girl meets dinosaur.

Exoskeleton Encounter by Erth. Climb inside an illuminated mechanical dinosaur frame. Roam fearlessly around The Concourse stalking your prey.

Prehistoric Aviary by Erth. Swooping and soaring, flapping and squawking, this is an aviary of a very different kind. A pedal-powered machine helps these avian creatures take flight.

Bridge of Illusions. From certain points of view, watch the bridge seemingly break away from beneath your feet or have sinkholes suddenly open up in it. OK, when the the projection of the bridge started to sway, I felt a bit dizzy. Fortunately I jumped off before it collapsed.
Real-time projections of the activity below create the illusion that the bridge has magically disappeared.
