Vegan Items to Buy at Costco
I am not a vegetarian but I don’t eat much meat. At most, I eat it 4 times/year. I obviously eat a lot of fish (Product Review: Foppen Hot Smoked Salmon); (Product Review:Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon); (Product Review: Blue hill Bay smoked whitefish); (Product Review: Bluehill Bay Smoked Whitefish Salad)). I cannot imagine being vegan, given how much I love dairy products. However, I do eat a lot of vegan items.
I came across a blog post mentioning many vegan options at Costco. I have added descriptions, brands, and a few thoughts. Some may no longer be available or may not be available in all warehouse stores. If I happen to know that the item is no longer available and the replacement, I will add that information because items may vary across locations.
Vegan Food Items at Costco
1. Innofoods Organic Coconut Clusters
The article suggests eating these clusters plain or as part of breakfast bowls (as granola). The clusters are comprised of organic toasted coconut, organic chia, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, brown rice syrup, and cane sugar.
I have never tasted these clusters. I love the granola I get at Costco (Product Review: Kirkland Ancient Grains granola), so I am not inclined to buy these (as it is, I want more meals for my granola) and I don’t love seeds.
2. Kirkland Organic Quinoa
This quinoa is prewashed and ready to cook. It can be used in a variety of recipes.
I like quinoa a lot. It is quick and easy to make, has a nutty flavor, is healthy, and serves as a great side dish for fish (see, I find many uses for vegan items even as a non-vegan).
3. Della Organic Brown Rice
Like quinoa, brown rice can be used in a variety of recipes.
I agree that brown rice is a tasty addition to recipes. I like it as another side for fish.
4. Amy’s Organic Soups Multipack
The author reports that these soups can be eaten either hot or cold. The pack that she bought contains cans of quinoa and split pea but she also recommends the lentil soup.
I have not eaten Amy’s products in years due to different opinions about the kosher status. However, although I never tried the soup, the frozen entrees I ate were all very good. It appears that there are different variety packs sold at Costco. I think it’s funny that one “variety pack” consists of lentil soup with or without vegetables (way to branch out…) I also can’t imagine eating canned soup cold, despite having no problem eating regular canned lentils cold.
5. Banza Chickpea Pasta
The author recommends this pasta above other gluten-free pasta options. She claims that they do not fall apart, taste like regular pasta, and have a lot of protein.
The only legume-based pasta that I have tried is red lentil pasta. I liked the texture, the taste, and the knowledge that I was getting protein in a pasta-based meal. However, I don’t think it tasted like regular pasta. Perhaps chickpea pasta is different. I would definitely be open to trying this variety of pasta.
6. Mariani Organic Pitted Dates
These dates can provide sweetness without added sugar.
I do like dried fruit, including prunes (bring on the old man jokes…). I have enjoyed foods sweetened with dates, such as Lara Bars. However, I associate dates with figs and, ever since learning about wasps in figs, have difficulty with dates (irrational, sure).
7. Del Destino Organic Fire Roasted Red Peppers
The author suggests blending these peppers into a pasta sauce or adding them into sandwiches.
I love red peppers, both plain and roasted. My first experience in the culinary field was working in a tennis club snackbar. We roasted vegetables for the wraps and, although not kosher at the snackbar, I started making them at home sometimes.
8. Safie Organic Sweet Pickled Beets
According to the article, these beets have a tang and are good plain or in salads.
I have only eaten beets a few time as part of a few side dishes in college. I don’t remember having strong feelings about them either way. However, I guess the fact that I have not had them since says that I was not a huge fan of them.
9. Paesana Organic Tomato Basil Sauce
Apparently this pasta sauce tastes good and contains less salt and sugar than other premade sauces.
I have tried many jarred pasta sauces. I am not too picky, as long as the sauce has a lot of strong tomato flavor. I have never tried the Paesana brand but would certainly be open to it.
10. Kirkland Organic Peanut Butter
The author raves about the price and the taste of this peanut butter.
I have definitely made my positive thoughts on this peanut butter clear (Product Review:Kirkland organic creamy peanut butter).
11. S & W Organic Black Beans
Apparently these beans contain less sodium than other canned beans.
I like canned beans, including chickpeas, kidney, black, and lentil. I also try to buy lower sodium beans. However, I don’t think this brand is kosher.
12. Garofalo Organic Pasta 6-Pack
The author recommends this pasta for the texture and the shapes.
Although this pasta is probably quite good, I don’t buy pasta at Costco, as it is an item about which I am not picky (with the exception of fresh pasta, I really cannot taste a difference across brands) and that is often on sale at supermarkets (Costco vs. Supermarkets). In addition, I prefer to choose the shape, depending on the meal (e.g., alphabets with butter; fettuccine with chunky marinara sauce).
13. Hippeas Chickpea Puffs
The author ranks these puffs as her favorite snack.
I have never tried this product but I would like to. I used to love cheddar cheese popcorn, cheese puffs, and cheese curls, so I imagine I would like these as well.
14. GoGo Gluten-Free Quinoa Noodles
Apparently these quinoa noodles taste like regular pasta.
I have never tried quinoa pasta. There are so many varieties of pasta that I don’t feel inclined to try it.
15. Kirkland Organic Baked Seaweed Crisps
The author claims that people who like nori will like these crisps.
I am not interested in this snack.
16. Organic Salad Topper
This salad addition consists of cranberries, pumpkin seeds, and spiced sunflower seeds.
I don’t like dried fruit or seeds in my salads (or seeds in general), so I would not buy this item.
17. Loma Linda Plant-Based Protein Chipotle Bowls
The author suggests these Chipotle bowls as an easy meal to make and serve as part of a meal, along with a salad.
I almost eliminated this item from the list because I have never seen it at Costco. However, in case they are sold in some stores, I left it on the list.
18. Del Destino Artichokes (in water)
The article suggests these artichokes, as they are in water (vs. oil).
I have always loved artichokes. However, I then learned that it is extremely difficult to inspect and clean them to meet kosher certification. My “replacement” is hearts of palm, which taste similar to me.
19. Premium Gold Organic Flaxseed
The author recommends several uses for this flaxseed, including smoothies, breakfast bowls, and lentil meatballs.
I know that flaxseed is very healthy. However (TMI alert), it does not always sit well in my stomach. Although I will eat foods that include it, I am not inclined to add it.
20. Somersaults Organic Sunflower Seed Crunchy Bites
This snack is made from sunflower seeds and toasted grains.
These bites seem like a variation on a rice cake. I am not interested in this product.
21. Organic Raw Cashews
The author uses these nuts in recipes.
I know that many people blend cashew nuts to use as a substitute for cheese and other dairy items. I love cashew nuts but to eat as a snack rather than as part of recipes. I tend to prefer the variety of mixed nuts (Product Review: Kirkland Signature Extra Fancy Unsalted Mixed Nuts). In addition, I learned that organic raw nuts are more likely have bugs, so I am less inclined to buy them.
22. Kirkland Organic Dark Chocolate Belgian Thins
This candy is made from dark chocolate, nuts, seeds, quinoa puffs, and goji berries.
Growing up, my family occasionally bought Cadbury chocolate bars. At the time, these bars were considered “gourmet”. I always preferred the bars with toffee. However, I also remember a variety with nuts and dried berries. I didn’t like the inclusion of the berries and, at the time, it seemed like a very odd combination. However, now chocolate covered dried fruit is very common. I still do not like the combination, so I would not buy these. They sound like a “busier” version of Bark Thins.
23. Popcornopolis Organic Popcorn
The author gives this popcorn a very good review.
I tend not to buy popcorn too often, despite liking it.
24. Late July Organic Multigrain Tortilla Chips
These chips are made with a variety of seeds and grains.
My family buys these chips relatively frequently. I am not a big fan of chips, so I have never tried them. However, they do look good and I think I should give them a try.
25. Organic Lentil Turmeric Crackers
The author recommends these crackers either plain or with toppings. The crackers are made from lentils, white corn, seeds, and turmeric seasoning.
I don’t eat a lot of crackers. I went to a presentation years ago touting the health benefits of turmeric. However, I don’t think I have had it, and am not too interested.
26. Lotus Foods Organic Rice Ramen Noodles
The author writes that these noodles have good texture and taste.
Pre-kosher days, I used to eat those square packs of ramen noodles with the little flavor packet. I also used to love rice noodles in Pad Thai. I have not had rice noodles since then but I imagine that I would like them very much.
27. Nature’s Earthly Choice Organic Chia Seeds
The author reports adding chia seeds to many of her foods, including smoothies and salads.
Chia seeds are everywhere these days. I am sure they are in many foods that I eat, but I have never bought them to add.
28. Pure Organic Layered Fruit Bars
These bars are made from fruit purees and juices and do not contain added sugar. Each bar has two flavors (Pineapple Passion Fruit; Strawberry Banana; Raspberry Lemonade).
I used to like fruit roll-ups but I imagine I would find them too sweet now. As these bars are natural and small, I think they would be a good snack for when I want something a little sweet.
29. Rhythm Organic Roasted Kale Snacks
The author compares these snacks to the seaweed crisps.
I would be more interested in these than the seaweed snacks. However, I am not too interested in them.
30. Dave’s Killer Organic Bread (2-Pack)
The article reports that this bread is both tasty and less expensive than at other stores.
I have mentioned that I like this brand but tend to buy the cinnamon raisin variety (Costco Wish List 2).
31. Taylor Farms Organic Baby Spinach
The author writes that she uses this spinach raw and in cooked recipes.
I like both cooked and raw spinach. I think it makes a very good base for salads, as it is more flavorful and healthier than other types of lettuce. I also used to make a spinach risotto that I liked very much.
32. Hannah Classic Organic Hummus
The author reports being surprised to like this hummus because it is plain. She also suggests adding flavors and vegetables.
I eat quite a bit of hummus, usually on veggie burgers ((Slightly) different veggie burgers now offered)), vegetables, or pretzels. Although I have had a few brands of which I was not a fan, I am not too picky. I will occasionally buy a flavored variety (although I really dislike lemon hummus) but generally stick to plain. As hummus is frequently on sale at the grocery store, I generally buy it there (Costco vs. Supermarkets). However, I have had and been pleased with the Hannah brand from Costco.
33. Wholly Guacamole Organic Guacamole Packets
These packets are easy to transport.
This packaging definitely bothers me. However, I have bought the three pack of this brand of guacamole at Costco. It is delicious, on vegetables or on veggie burgers.
34. Wildbrine Organic Raw Sauerkraut
The author ranks this item as her favorite sauerkraut.
I never used to like sauerkraut. Growing up, we had it in the house during the summers because my mom really likes it on hot dogs. We actually used to joke that hot dogs were her excuse to eat sauerkraut. However, because I do like health salad, I should probably try it again.
35. Spindrift Sparkling Water
This item was listed on the blog but not written about.
I have mentioned being interested in try this product (Additional May Deals at Costco).
36. Silk Organic Almond Milk
The author recommends this almond milk plain or in cooked recipes.
I have never tried almond milk. I like dairy milk so I generally stick with that. I have had soy milk and don’t mind it. I also once tried rice milk in college but found it too sweet. I am actually interested in trying almond milk.
37. Kirkland Organic Green Tea
The author reports starting to drink this tea following the recommendation of a nutritionist.
I have mentioned not liking tea very much. However, I think that much of my dislike is due to my expectations that fruit-flavored tea will have a stronger fruit flavor. Therefore, I think that I would prefer teas that I do not expect to taste stronger.
38. San Francisco Bay French Roast Single Serve Coffee No-Waste Cups
Apparently these Keurig cups are better for the environment than are regular K-Cups.
I have mentioned multiple times that I don’t like coffee.
39. GTs Organic Raw Kombucha
The article mentions the good price for this kombucha.
I have never tried kombucha. I probably should try it.
40. Pulmuone Organic Sprouted Tofu (4-pack)
The author suggests several recipes for this tofu. She also suggests freezing it if one will not be able to use it before the expiration date.
I have never bought tofu at Costco. I actually like tofu in many dishes, including tofu scramble and shakshuka. I also find that the expiration date is usually far out, thus eliminating the need to freeze it. However, it is not much less expensive at Costco than at other stores and I’d rather buy it in smaller quantities and use the refrigerator space for other foods.
41. Mass River Farms Organic Cauliflower Tots
The author suggests these cauliflower tots as an easy side dish.
I have never seen nor heard of this item. I very much enjoy tater tots and probably would like these as well. I know that, over the past several years, cauliflower has been used in more dishes (e.g., rice). Although I like cooked cauliflower (raw is not for me), I have never tried these products.
42. Chloe’s Organic Fruit Pops
The article draws attention to the seasonal presence of this item sold in a combination pack of strawberry and mango.
As I have mentioned, I am not big on the ice cream novelties. I don’t eat many popsicles, although they can be a great treat on very hot days. I have never tried this brand and would not buy this package due to not liking strawberry-flavored products. I also have seen mention of Jonny’s popsicles being sold at Costco this year so that brand may have replaced Chloe’s, at least in some locations.
43. Green Giant Organic Frozen Spiralized Zucchini
The author recommends using this product in place of noodles and cautions against overcooking it.
I have never tried zucchini “noodles”. I don’t love zucchini. I did try hearts of palm “pasta” once. As mentioned above, I like hearts of palm very much. However, I prefer them as a side vegetable rather than as a replacement for another product. Although they were fine in the “pasta” dish I made, they definitely did not taste like pasta. Therefore, I am fine with products used as pasta replacements as long as it is acknowledged that they do not taste the same.
44. Sweet Earth General Tso’s Tofu
This four-pack contains crispy tofu, sweet and sour sauce, brown rice, and broccoli.
I have never seen this item and it is not kosher. However, it does sound good.
45. Green Giant Frozen Organic Riced Cauliflower
The author suggests this item for another easy-to-cook dinner option.
As mentioned above, I have never tried cauliflower rice but do think I’d like it.
46. Gardein Seven Grain Crispy Tenders
According to the article, these tenders are easy to make and do taste like chicken.
I mentioned in my review of the veggie burgers that Costco used to carry that I find the idea of “fake meat” strange. Similar to how I am fine with vegetables in the place of noodles as long as they are not expected to taste like pasta, I am fine with vegetable-based burgers as long as they are not expected to taste like meat.
47. Dr. Praeger’s Organic Veggie Burger
The author suggests eating these burgers on a bun with lettuce, tomato, and sauce.
I reviewed two varieties of these burgers (Product Review: Dr. Praeger’s harvest veggie burgers);((Slightly) different veggie burgers now offered)). But I think they have since been discontinued (It’s Gone? Discontinued Products). I actually never ate them as a burger on a bun (although it sounds good). Instead, I ate two of them on a plate with hummus or guacamole (both mentioned above) and vegetables on the side.
48. Path of Life Frozen Organic Broccoli
The author reports that this broccoli is her preferred brand due to the large pieces.
I like cooked broccoli a lot. However, due to the difficulty in cleaning it for kashrut certification, I am limited to buying kosher brands.
49. Cascadian Farms Frozen Organic Blueberries
The author suggests this item as a topping for oatmeal.
I have never tried this brand and have actually only seen other brands at Costco. However, I like frozen blueberries a lot. They are delicious heated and eaten with waffles or pancakes or stirred into yogurt (Product Review: Kirkland Organic Greek Yogurt). I have never tried them in oatmeal but I like that suggestion.
50. Happy Village Frozen Organic Cherries
According to the article, frozen cherries are a good addition to smoothies.
I have never seen frozen cherries at Costco (or actually anywhere). I like fresh cherries but am not interested in frozen ones.
51. Sambazon Organic Superfruit Acai Bites
These bites consist of acai sorbet inside of a dark chocolate shell.
I have not seen these at Costco. I like fruit sorbet (although I have never tried acai) and
I like chocolate but am not sure I would like them together because I don’t generally like fruit with chocolate.
Do you buy these vegan items at Costco? Any others you’d recommend?
