Uncharted (2022)

Director: Ruben Fleischer
Starring: Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas
Street-smart Nathan Drake is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan, and lost 500 years ago by the House of Moncada.
I was in the mood for a treasure hunt movie and thought ‘Uncharted’ would be a good option. I was so wrong…!
I don’t know what it is about Tom Holland, but I just don’t like his movies…or maybe I don’t like him in them… He always seem to portray the same silly, immature characters – always the same silly humour. In ‘Uncharted’ he stars as Nathan Drake. The film is based on the video game franchise, but not being a gamer myself, I didn’t have anything to compare the movie with – which is a good thing.
Nathan’s brother left fifteen years ago and Nathan still has no idea where he is. Nathan is then approached by “a friend” of his brother’s, Victor (Mark Wahlberg) who ‘hires’ Nathan to help him find the very treasure Nathan and his brother fantasized about.
Hell, this movie is just ridiculous and implausible! ALL the characters are complete idiots. There’s also no chemistry whatsoever between any of them. In fact, none of them are likable. Nathan is probably the most likable, but way too silly to be taken seriously. The film also doesn’t have a clear antagonist. Just when you thought you knew who the antagonist was, he was eliminated and out popped a new antagonist. (pfffff!!!!)
I tried so hard to switch off a few brain cells in order to enjoy the movie for its treasure hunt element, but alas, the silly dialogue kept ruining it! There was not an inch of logic or realism to the events and character actions. Everything here happened simply to make the film work – regardless of how ridiculous it might be. It’s preposterous, actually.
‘Uncharted’ became a bit better around the one-hour mark, when it became less comical and more adventure driven. The climax is something we’ve never seen before and quite spectacular. But, sadly, again that darn stupid Hollywood humour kept on ruining it!!
If you’re into treasure hunt movies, rather watch ‘National Treasure’ or ‘Tomb Raider’, which are far more superior.
‘Uncharted’ earned $402 million on a $102 million budget. Well, I guess there are quite a few people who did switch off their brain cells then…
Would I watch it again? Ugh, no!
