Unceasing Praise
But I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because He has dealt bountifully with me. (Psalm 13:5-6)
David has experienced despair; David has petitioned God for help. And he has come to a conclusion – “but I have trusted in Your mercy.” David’s heart also rejoiced in “salvation.” This is not salvation to heaven from deliverance from trials to come…when it comes. And it hadn’t come yet.
And, did you notice that David never thanked God for bringing him out of these trials? He simply praised God for finding Him and sensing His presence in the midst of them. David knew the trials were necessary.
And, did you notice vs. 6?
David’s praise and singing wouldn’t cease. No rebellious son or king seeking his life or loss of friends or the death of his infant son or any sickness would cease his praising. And we need that reminder. No loss of job or friendship or gossip about our life or lying about our character or any other thing should cause us to cease from praise.
John Bunyan once wrote, “I never knew what it was for God to stand by me at all turns, and at every offer of Satan to afflict me…as I have found him since I came in hither; for look how fears have presented themselves, so have supports and encouragements; yet, when I have started, even as it were at nothing else but my shadow, yet God, as being very tender of me, hath not suffered me to be molested, but would with one Scripture or another, strengthen me against all; insomuch that I have often said, ‘Were it lawful, I could pray for greater trouble, for the greater comfort’s sake.’”
David says, “He has dealt bountifully with me.” In other words, “Your blessings outweigh the sufferings. You do more to bless my life than what my enemies do to me.”
These verses end with a punctuation of praise, regardless of the circumstances. The cloud part and the sun came through. Such is the mindset of a redeemed heart.
