Updates: Just to give Warren Wilson some love, I think they won yesterday. No box scores on the NCAA site or either of the schools’ sites. The stream looks to be a set four ending in 15-13. So, this was the kind of hell I would have had to go through to list the match yesterday. Still, yay Warren Wilson (I think).

Oshkosh/Carthage has started. RICKY WATCH! He’s sitting on the floor next to the scorer’s table and the Oshkosh bench.

Carthage makes the #3 team in the country work a bit but in the end they get swept. Second set went extras.

Had a little night out but wanted to get back for that ULV/CMS match. Here are some updates before I go watch that important SCIAC tilt.

Oshkosh gets the brace tonight also beating Edgewood. Another sweep. This one looked a bit tighter per the box.

Hope gets the sweep over Calvin. I’m a little surprised it wasn’t closer. Calvin looked to be returning more than Hope prior to the season but Hope is just rolling right now. This one was 14, 18 and 24. In our last national match to watch, it was another sweep with Springfield rolling in this one.

McMurry beats HPU in 4-sets. I little surprising since HPU was playing at home and had just beaten UMHB.

Alright, time for the late matches. As I said, I’ll be tuned into ULV/CMS.

Nice pregame work by the CMS broadcast. I haven’t noticed that before. Normally, it’s just show up a minute before it starts.

Five Live Stats up and four work. What’s going on Linfield? Whoops. Never mind. 5 for 5.

I don’t know much but the overpass to Mya Ray is probably not a high percentage play for CMS tonight.

The announcer is talking about players on both sides having played for the La Verne coach. He means in club. I believe the CMS coach and the La Verne coach both coach at the same club. Kurt (CMS) had the 17s and Jeff (La Verne) had the 18s. So players on both sides could have played for both and with each other.

Things couldn’t have started worse for CMS. Struggling in the service receive, a couple of service errors and four attack errors. When CMS takes a timeout, you know things are bad. ULV up 12-6. (Could have been 13-6 as the Live Stats doesn’t agree with the stream.)

I don’t know much but the overpass to Mya Ray is probably not a high percentage play for CMS tonight.

19-8 and Kurt takes their second timeout. My mind is blown. Right now, it’s about settling down and passing so you’re ready to tackle the next set.

That was a better timeout as CMS scores 5-straight. La Verne timeout. Okay, there is this cute little kid sweeping the floor at CMS. Not terribly effective but still…cute.

Ugh. “A throwing violation.” That’s back row attack, sir.

25-22 La Verne. They were up 19-8 before CMS closed to within 2 points a couple of times. Mya Ray had 9 kills that set. When they got in trouble she was there. 7 attack errors by La Verne helped close the gap. Obviously, that was good for La Verne but CMS has to feel good how they fought back.

In other matches, Whittier is up 1-0. Redlands go up 1-0 and I think that had to be a comeback as I thought PP was up in that one. Never mind. I just checked and that was really early. Close set the rest of the way. Caltech shocks Cal Lu in the first set so my first thought is Live Stats is wrong. Just checked and it’s right. Beavers up 1-0. Linfield is also up 1-0.

Okay. The announcer is talking about NPI coming out this week. Hey, glad you read the site.

There was the commercial for Nordicplunge or something like that. Do people pay $1000 for a cold plunge device? I mean, it’s the same thing as a trash can with ice, right? And…oh…it’s freaking cold!

CMS is really going after Lauren Gott on their serves. She’s handled 22 serves so far and no one else is double-digits. She’s doing a really good job and is the underrated star of this match so far. La Verne is going after both CMS outsides and having better success.

5 service errors for CMS tonight. Have to serve tough but also have to get them in. And if you are going to miss…miss long. Make them think.

Gott with her 9th kill to finish off the second set 25-18. Ray has 13. Both have made only one error. Shae Delany with 9 kills for CMS.

Redlands go up 2-0 with a big set two win. I was thinking Redlands would come in strong today for this match. Cal Lu takes set two and it’s tied 1-1 there. Whittier takes set two over Oxy 25-23 and go up 2-0. Oxy is being a little annoying so far in conference. Interesting. Linfield up 2-0 in their match. Putting a hold on a top 4 spot with a win.

Mya Ray just hit a cross court shot that hit the foot of the CMS outside that was standing basically where a setter would be when setting a ball. Maybe a couple of feet away from the net. Insane if you don’t get a block up.

I’ve watched a number of TCU matches this season. I think they were number 12 in the nation this week. They had their best outside go down with an injury earlier this year and I think Mya would be pretty close to her in ability.

Kick save from Keilani Mumolo!

CMS up 12-10 in the third set. Four blocks has been key.

I don’t know much but the overpass to Alanna Jones is probably not a high percentage play for CMS tonight.

La Verne up by 6 in this set but it’s tied at 21 a piece.

La Verne with the next 2 points. Zacky Coaston earned both. One kill and one block.

Mya Ray with her 21st kill and the sweep goes to La Verne. She just hits so many different angles from where ever she takes the swing. Shane Delany with a nice match for CMS but the outsides for ULV were too much.

Whittier gets the sweep. PP takes set three. Redlands up 2-1. I’ve got that match on right now. Willamette took set three so Linfield is up 2-1. Cal Lu blew away Caltech in sets 2 and 4 but it’s close in the fourth. CLU leads 2-1.

Savannah, is your team chanting “FBK”? I thought you knew that chant needs to be trashed. Tell them I said to be better.

PP up in set four and I’m switching over to see if Caltech can shock CLU.

The CLU bench is always crazy. Love it. On the other side…is there even a bench for Caltech? Do they just have one extra player? Only 7 have played but there may be a couple of injured players on the bench. Ouch. Get well! Caltech had 2 set points (I think) but it’s now 24-24. Last two set points for Caltech have been service errors.

27-25 CLU. Sorry, Beavers. I did not bring you luck there. Willamette is absolutely destroying Linfield in set four. This one will go to a fifth.

Back to PP/Redlands. Lily Kautai has 15 kills with no errors for Redlands. She would seem to be a problem. to the Sagehens. Willamette 25-6 in the fourth. Yikes.

25-19 Redlands. They take down PP. The gap between a lot of these teams in the SCIAC is really close.

Off to the last match of the night as Linfield is up 2-1 in the fifth set. Statistically this should be a Willamette win but a lot of that is from that big set four win. Caroline Jameson with a huge game so far for Willamette.

15-7 Willamette. That really opens up that fourth spot in the NWC Tournament. Fun times.

Random Thoughts:

My apologies to Warren Wilson for not doing a Match Day yesterday for their Toccoa Falls match. In fairness…it was Toccoa Falls.

Where to start? I guess with the big match in the West and that’s La Verne/CMS. Both teams will be amped for this one. I don’t hold out a lot of hope for CMS. They struggled to beat Cal Lu at home and La Verne is not Cal Lu. On the other hand, there is a lot of history here and after 3-years of playing Mya, CMS should know what they are going to do. (My advice…duck.) Of course, CMS has Brooke McKee and La Verne can’t let her go wild, either. In matches like this, commentators say it will be the other players that beat you but that’s only if these two cancel each other out. I wrote in the Weekly Wrap-Up how important these La Verne matches are to CMS but, on the flip side…La Verne has suffered at the hands of CMS for a number of years and they want payback. On a sad note. There was a death in the SoCal volleyball club community this past week. A number of the players from both teams knew this young lady and attended her funeral. So, as much as these teams would like to beat each other, there are a number of friendships involved and humans needing the support of other humans. Volleyball may be a bit of an afterthought as this match starts. My love to all impacted this week.

Switching over to Carthage as they have a nice little get-together between them, Oshkosh and Edgewood. If someone can win two, they may have a great shot at a tournament bid.

Third on the hit list is Calvin/Hope and that’s a little crazy. If Calvin can win this, with their easier schedule, they could be in a pretty secure spot for a tournament bid. Hope is playing well and will be the heavy favorites and are my pick here.

I added the Springfield/Smith match as a fun NEWMAC match. Both teams need as much NPI as they can get right now.

Back to the West and McMurry comes into Howard Payne. HPU has to have confidence after that UMHB win. This should be a good one.

In the NWC, Willamette goes to Linfield with that 4th spot in the NWC Tournament wide open. Big win for whomever gets it.

Finally, we have the other SCIAC matches as they begin their Tuesday portion of their conference schedule. Whittier and Cal Lu should win at home. The other fun one in conference is Redlands/PP. I’m a little surprised Redlands is 0-2 and they are going to be hungry for this one. PP needs to be ready because when Redlands are playing well, they can beat almost anyone in conference. On the flip side, PP just needs to play clean and get some momentum going for a win here.
