Updates: Something I forgot to add to my NPI Rankings article were the big upsets from last week. Upsets are defined as teams who win that have an NPI 5+ points or less than their opponent. This will change as we go through the season and NPIs change but for the record, they were:
Millikin over UW-Platteville 5.263 NPI difference
PLU over Southwestern 5.263 NPI difference
Looks like Oshkosh should have an easy time of it. They are up 1-0 and winning in the second. Lynchburg is down 1-0 but leading in the second set. Tufts won their first set but the second is close.
Back from dinner. Oshkosh and Tufts with the sweeps. Pretty much expected. Lynchburg dropped the first set but won 3-1. This is a little unexpected as Southern Va. always has a pretty decent team. Lynchburg should be interesting in the ODAC this season.
Oshkosh is leading St Norbert 2-0 in their second match. Norbert is always tough so this will be a good win for the mighty Titans, if it happens. (Narrator’s voice: It did.)
I’m watching Ozarks right now. Ozarks won the first two sets but dropped the third. What is wild is that you can see both the floor and ceiling in the stream. The ceiling is very low in this gym but it’s still a bit surprising to actually see it on the video.
Five ties so far at the end of set four. Balls hitting rafters…balls hitting lights…it’s wild. Too many serves going out is a problem for both teams. 30-28. I guess they didn’t get the memo about always ending extras at 32. Williams Baptist evens it up and the first official volleyball match for Ozarks is going to a 5th set.
Rule idea! In the 5th set, only one timeout per side but there is a one minute official timeout at the turn. Who says “no”?
If I had a nickel for each time the ball hits something in the Ozark gym, I’d be $1.50 richer! Ozarks gets the turn and now time for the 1 minute official timeout.
Ozarks win 15-13 and take their first ever volleyball victory in program history. The final point was a little weird as the team squandered two match points. Their finally attack sailed out but one lines person saw a touch. After some discussion, the up ref agreed and the match was over.
That’s it for me. See you tomorrow!

Random Thoughts:
Ozarks has played two scrimmages or JV matches but this will be their first real match. It is against a non-DIII opponent so it doesn’t count for anything but still kind of cool for the program. They actually won’t play their first DIII match until September 16 at Lyon. They will then play their first SCAC match against Dallas on the 20th. One thing to watch for in this match is how the low ceiling plays. You better have ball control when stepping into Mabee Gymnasium!
