Tuesday, Oct 24 Match Day!
Updates: I was watching the TLU/Southwestern match and it was clear we got bad Southwestern tonight so we switched to hockey with TLU having a large lead in the 2nd set. They ultimately went up 24-19 only to give up 7 straight points to lose the second. Now, because I’m clearly a jinx, can’t watch the match. It appears the comeback was fueled by some TLU mistakes so it will be interesting to see if that spurs the Pirates.
UMHB is cruising to an easy sweep over Concordia. HSU is handling McMurry while the other matches are split.
Not that I was watching, but Southwestern goes up 22-21 with TLU scoring the last 4 points (3 by Tanyse Moehrig). TLU up 2-1.
Austin College takes a close first set from ETBU.
TLU wins 3-1 over Southwestern. Good news for Austin College fans. Sul Ross and HPU are in a fifth set and ETBU tied up AC by taking the second set.
AC pushes ETBU to 5-sets but ETBU takes the match.
Late matches are going. I’m watching the CMS/La Verne match. ULV with a nice lead right now in the first.
Live Stats shows an old score for the Pomona-Pitzer match.
ULV/CMS does not disappoint. ULV with nice lead. CMS comes back and takes the lead. ULV comes back and has a set point. Ray couldn’t terminate but Holmes does. ULV gets a second set point with Capistrano off the front row. No good. CMS ties it. Ray with another kill and then Gott terminates the next point for the set win. That’s the first set CMS has lost in conference this season. Ray with 8 kills and Holmes with 7. Points were 20-19 with CMS making a few more attacking errors. Slim margin in this one.
CMS take set set two and we are tied. The guys in the crowd under the up referee are having a blast.
A lot of service errors in this one. CMS the worse offender. Pomona up 2-0 on Redlands.
Jenna Holmes (CMS) is outplaying Mya Ray (ULV) but ULV has more weapons going right now. Gott (ULV) unsung hero.
ULV takes the third and are up 2-1. Big upset in the works and one that really could secure a ULV at-large bid if they need it.
Ugh. Pomona-Pitzer trying to sweep a tough Redlands team fighting through a set three that has gone extras. PP setter Savanna Cespedes goes down in a no contact incident. She was carried off the floor. Redlands then runs off a couple of points for the set three win. PP up 2-1.
La Verne takes down CMS in 4-sets. 23 kills for Jenna Holmes but that was about it for CMS tonight. Mya Ray with 18 kills and Lauren Gott with 15. 24 attacking errors for CMS to 17 for La Verne. Something under the radar to me was the tough serving from La Verne. I just felt that CMS wasn’t in system as much as usual. This resulted in a lot of sets to the outside. Fun game to watch. The SCIAC Tournament will be fun.
Pomona-Pitzer is able to take set four and the match over Redlands. Here’s hoping the best for Savanna.
Random Thoughts: The ASC and SCIAC have matches today with a couple of cross conference matches thrown in.
LETU/Centenary and ETBU/AC are the cross matches. Austin College has been playing well but I expect both ASC teams to take these games.
I don’t see anything too exciting in the ASC matches.
Oh, I forgot the one SCAC match and it includes my Pirates. They play TLU away in a really important match for both teams. Southwestern needs the win to separate from Austin College in the fight for the last tournament spot while TLU is trying to secure a #2 seed in the tournament.
In the SCIAC, we have a fun one in CMS/La Verne. CMS has not lost a set in conference play this season but I think that changes tonight. I still think CMS wins this but it will be 4-1. I am really interested to see the play of McKee, Sawyer and Bell for CMS. If they both have a good match then I think CMS has the firepower to make a run in the NCAA Tournament. For La Verne, they have to do more than just set Ray and Gott. They need production from the right side and middles. Also watch what CMS does when La Verne’s setter (Capistrano) is on the front row. Who wins that battle is important.
Last but not least, Chapman/Whittier is huge for Whittier. Lose this and they put Cal Lutheran back in contention.
