Tuesday, Nov 12 Match Day!
Updates: I thought it might be good to look at not only the Region X matches but those matches that might impact the at-large window.
Springfield is up 2-0. Smith is also up 2-0 but down in the third. Babson is tied 1-1 but leading big in the third. ONU is leading big in the third but is down 2-0.
Hartwick was the high NPI team in the Empire 8 (I think) but they are the 3 seed. They are currently losing to the 6 seed 2-1, Brockport. Hartwick’s NPI is 56.682. Same story (sort of) as Susquehanna is losing to Catholic 2-0. That would be a 6 point upset.
Wellesley takes the third. Smith up 2-1.
UW-Platteville looks like they will take set one over UW-Eau Claire. If UWEC loses, they will be around 60.42 and should be safe for an at-large. Anything 60 or above looks really safe.
ONU looks to be in real trouble. Down 2-1 and down big in the fourth. They would drop to around 58.50 with a loss. Ned had ONU getting an at-large but they had to win this match. I don’t think anything lower than 59 will get an at-large so a loss here is probably curtains for the Polar Bears.
Platteville wins set one over Eau Claire. Babson hangs on in set three to go up 2-1. MIT getting a battle from Emerson. They are up 2-1 but that’s thanks to a 27-25 set two win. Mild NPI upset with William Peace (6 seed) over Methodist (3 seed).
I do enjoy it when games are on my Roku. Watching JCU destroy ONU in the fourth set.
I struggle with the decision not to put in a DS for the middle serving in set five or when your team is down big. You can worry about subs later.
25-14 JCU over ONU. Coast Guard win set three but are down 2-1 to Springfield.
Switched over to Clark/Babson. If the crowd stands, it blocks the court! Seems like this could have been thought out better. Clark up 22-19 in the fourth trying to force a fifth. A Babson loss drops them down to 58.89 so they would be out, too. Why is there a beam to the left of the camera? Is there no other location for the camera? It’s almost an obstructed seat!
3 set points for Clark and we are now tied 24-24. Babson now up 25-24…match point. I do have to say that Clark has looked really bad here at the end of this set but I’ve only seen a few points. I think the camera person has to lift the camera over the crowd to see. It’s like watching on a boat right now.
Babson wins 3-1. Based on about 10 points I watched, they deserved it. They are still not in with a match against MIT (most likely) but odds are good. MIT won 3-1.
Platteville up 2-0 on Eau Claire. Smith wins 3-1.
Now watching Springfield leading in the fourth set against Coast Guard. They are up 18-11 and looking to close it out. How did Coast Guard finish behind Clark? Again, based on a very small sample size.
I don’t have any real grandkids yet, but a lot of volleyball granddaughters. Emma White is preparing me to handle being disappointed with my future grandkids. She is a graduate assistant coach for Springfield. Could you not have found a non-New England school? (Joke) Emma played for Southwestern and is greatly loved by me.
Just noticed that Albion finished as the 3 seed over Trine. Trine has a much higher NPI. Anyway, in my NPI Rankings article, I thought Calvin would get Trine. I need to redo their number. Which would be 59.48 switching Albion in for Trine. That’s a drop of about 0.25! They went from most likely safe if they make the finals to “no clue” now.
Springfield gets the win 3-1. Looking good for an at-large.
Why doesn’t the Eau Claire gym have a beam next to the camera? I was getting use to that. These Wisconsin public universities seem to have some money for their gyms. It’s a shame the New England schools don’t charge enough for tuition.
Augustana (6 seed) is about to upset Carthage. My word of advice in scheduling is to never play Augustana. They just always seem to be a tough out when you think you’re better. (Note – thought they were leading the third. They are up 2-0 but Carthage is leading set three.)
Susquehanna and Hartwick both lost tonight.
The cut to commercials needs some work for this game. Otherwise, a really good production. UWEC fights back to tie the third set at 22-22 and then serve out.
Platteville with the sweep. I think UWEC is still good. Not much out there right now. Waiting on PP/Chapman.
PP up 1-0 and leading in the second. They are looking to make this a short night. Gill and Mountanos are a combined 13 for 19 in kills/attacks. Okay. Now they have 1 error between them. Things are looking up for Chapman.
PP takes the second set 25-13.
Chapman doing better in the third set but PP leading by 2. PP hitting only 0.100 this set after hitting 0.462 and 0.375 in the first two sets. Chapman now leading at 19-18.
25-21 Pomona-Pitzer. Mountanos came in and basically got every set. Worked out great as PP came back to win. PP hit 0.312 for the match.
Alright, until tomorrow. The SCIAC is at 4 teams now. Good season by Chapman. They have some excellent players in the Olivia’s (Sampson and Harrison).
Oh!!! NPI Rankings have been updated!
NCAA Scoreboard Ricky’s site has a page with all of the conference tournament links.

Region X Matches:
Random Thoughts: We have just the first round of the SCIAC in-region today. Our first ever 4/5 match for the SCIAC has Chapman heading over to PP. Pomona-Pitzer should take this but Chapman has surprised a couple of teams this year. Don’t let them get going.
Every high NPI team in the matches above are in the window except for Ohio Northern. These are all single elimination matches so don’t lose. I’ll come back with the NPI updates for anyone that gets tripped up.
