Together (2025)

Director: Michael Shanks
Starring: Dave Franco, Alison Brie, Damon Herriman
Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country. With tensions already flaring, an encounter with an unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love and their flesh.
‘Together’ has a highly original – if somewhat disturbing – premise that is not going to please everyone. I enjoyed the movie thanks to good performances and practical and CGI effects that’s going to make your skin crawl – similar to the effect ‘The Substance’ had on me; just not so extreme.
Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie (Alison Brie) are having relationship issues. This couple clearly is not on the same page. They move to a new home in a small town where Millie starts a new teaching job. Tim is a musician but at 30-something he hasn’t really achieved much and – in Millie’s words – he needs her more than she needs him. Ouch!
Getting lost in the woods during a storm, Tim and Millie fall into a cave, where they decide to spend the night to wait out the storm. They drink water from a pool, which – as it turns out – puts a curse on them. Upon waking the next morning, they find themselves sticking to each other. And this is just the beginning of a very disturbing fusion process between Tim and Millie…
Tim finds himself drawn to Millie like a magnet, to the point where he can’t be away from her, and soon after Millie starts experiencing the same supernatural feeling. The effects are incredibly well done, and become increasingly more disturbing as the film progresses.
My only issue with the film is the fact they never really explained the phenomenon. In ‘The Fly’ (1986) where Seth Brundle fuses with a fly, it is well explained and very believable. In ‘Together’ there is no justifiable explanation (apart from the fact that its a creepy idea). Many viewers will also be disappointed in the ending. I kinda enjoyed the movie for what it is. Don’t over-analyze, sit back and get ready to be totally grossed out!
Would I watch it again? In time, I believe I would.
