The Silent Clowns: First Ladies of Laughter

My old pals from the Silent Clowns film series are relaunching for the fall — with the exciting news that they are now based at the New York Public Library’s Performing Arts branch. This is excellent news, and well deserved. As I’ve reported here in previous posts, the Silent Clowns series is the best-curated and longest running silent comedy film series in the city. (It may also be the only one, but this only commends them all the more. They don’t have to be so damn good, but they always are.) They put on programs that are equally satisfying to children and scholars. It’s a broad reach, but they pull it off. This fall’s theme is the “The First Ladies of Laughter”, with movies by Bebe Daniels, Marion Davies and Constance Talmadge. The first in the series, Bebe Daniels’Feel My Pulse, opens tomorrow. Full details are here.
