The Morality Of Gaming

For me, video games have always been very easy to define, unadulterated forms of entertainment, distractions that enrich our lives and help each of us escape from the mundane and boring days we all have to endure from time to time. Gaming for the most part, is innocent and harmless fun, but are there some aspects of the games industry that are morally corrupt? For me, the answer is a resounding NO? Computer games are purely works of fiction and merely developed to entertain copious amounts of avid gamers. It’s not reality, and therefore games such as GTA shouldnt be taken too seriously and be blamed for inciting violence in impressionable individual’s, but these are just my views, I’m more interested in how other gamers feel about this.

When purchasing a game, most people, including myself, perhaps ignorantly, don’t consider whether a game is needlessly violent or even offensive, be it the manner in which the characters are portrayed or the context and content of a game. For example, Resident Evil 5 was brandished as being racist and is rumoured to be the reason that led to Sheva Alomar being introduced, but are these views shared by the majority of gamers, black or white? Do religion or even morality alter people’s perception of games and contribute to whether or not they should purchase them? Would you object to Call of Duty because of religious belief’s? Or are there too many people with far too much time on their hands, that feel they must wade into unknown waters and cast narrow-minded opinions on subjects that they have no knowledge of? (generally politicians). My point is, is morality taken seriously in video games? Or is it sometimes just misplaced? I’m very eager to hear your opinions.

On a personal note, I would like to make it perfectly clear that I’m not trying spark controversy or any negative reactions, and nor do I wish to cause anyone any offense with this article, if I do, then I sincerely apologise.
