The Lonely Fish Out of Water

I remember thinking I was so alone and the only youth pastor who felt the way I did: like a fish out of water. I was so unsure of what I was doing at almost every turn. But I wasn’t alone. So many other youth pastors felt that way. So many other pastors felt that way. So many other people felt that way. And they still do.

All of us have insecurities about our performances in different contexts (at work, social situations, etc). So take courage in knowing 1) you are most certainly alone, 2) you are multiple times better than you think you are, and 3) you are in good company. Consider the following fishes out of water:

*NOTE: In the examples below, the fish is in red, and the water is in blue.

  • Dorothy Gale / Oz

(1939)

  • Marty McFly / 1955(1985)

  • Miles Morales / having Spidey-Powers (2018)

  • Andy Dufresne / Prison (1994)

  • Will Freeman / befriending a teen boy (and being a decent human being) (2002)

  • Peter Banning / Neverland (1991)

  • Westley / Being mostly dead (1987)

  • George Taylor / the ape planet (1968)

  • Dewey Finn / classroom (teaching children) (2003)

  • Buck / taking care of children (1989)

  • Tommy Callahan / selling brake pads

(1995)

  • Peter, Susan, Edmund, Lucy / Narnia (2005)

  • Prince Akeem / New York City (1988)

  • Wall-E / outer space (2008)

  • Buddy / New York City (2003)

  • Chuck Noland / a remote desert island(2000)

  • King Kong / New York City (What is with that city??) (1933)

  • Nemo / A dentist’s office aquarium (and at one point literally becoming a fish out of water) (2003)

  • Happy Gilmore / playing golf, (1996)

No, you’re not alone in whatever situation you find yourself being that lonely fish. And though they be fictional, art imitates life. Be kind to yourself.

Congratulations . This is your week.

Best Actress:

Winona Ryder as Jo March in

Best Actor: Bob Barker as himself in

Best Quote: “Now, I’m about to do to you what Limp Bizkit did to music in the late 90s.” – Ryan Reynolds as Wade/Deadpool in

Just a little trivia to put a button on this thing: is both Adam Sandler’s favourite movie that he’s made and his favourite character from his films. Also, Bob Barker was going to turn down being in HG at first. He changed his mind when he found out he would win the fist fight with Happy.
