The Lift (De Lift) (1983)

Director: Dick Maas

Starring: Huub Stapel, Willeke van Ammelrooy, Josine van Dalsum

A lift technician finds himself drawn into a web of mystery and peril as he investigates the perplexing deadly accidents occurring in the elevators of a new office building.

And now for something completely different: a slasher movie where the killer is a lift! Yup, you heard me – a lift, as in an elevator.

When a lift in a new building malfunctions, technician Felix (Huub Stapel) is sent to fix it. However, when he inspects the lift, he finds nothing wrong with it. Despite his findings, several strange incidents occur, and Felix then tries to find out what is going on with the lift. He finds more than just a few irregularities…

Most of the film is set in the building – either in or outside the lift. There really is nothing special about this film, but I did find it unique in presenting us with a different kind of killer. It wasn’t bloody or gory or even scary, but it actually was very entertaining. I also enjoyed Felix as an ordinary guy who was just doing his job.

Whenever someone used the lift, you never knew whether they would come out alive! This film is bound to make people take the stairs instead! And then there’s the question: are the accidents supernatural related, or man-made? You’ll have to find out for yourself!

Would I watch it again? It certainly has entertainment value, so I think so, yes.
