Director: Jeff Renfroe

Starring: Kevin Zegers, Laurence Fishburne, Bill Paxton

Forced underground by the next ice age, a struggling outpost of survivors must fight to preserve humanity against a threat even more savage than nature.

Ok, I admit, ‘The Colony’ isn’t really something we haven’t seen before, but there’s no denying this is a very enjoyable action horror.

‘The Colony’ gave me a ‘Day after Tomorrow’ meets ‘The Thing’ feel – just without The Thing’s grotesque creations off course. So, we’ve seen this a hundred times before; people just trying to survive in an underground bunker in a post-apocalyptic world. The visuals are not the best and maybe not always believable, but at least there’s a good story here and characters I care about. The film only really gains momentum around the halfway mark, once the rescue team reaches Colony 5.

The moment they reach Colony 5, the film accelerates to bring us an action-packed horror adventure in a frozen world. I loved it. It was creepy, suspenseful, thrilling, exciting. There were horror, explosions, fighting, shooting. And off course, all hell broke loose during the film’s heart pounding final act. It does end very abruptly, though. I wanted it to run at least another twenty minutes or so. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this.

‘The Colony’ received nominations for Achievement in Costume Design, Achievement in Make-up, and Best Editing, and won for Best Fantasy Film.

Would I watch it again? Yes.
