The City of Lost Children (1995)

Director: Marc Caro, Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Starring: Ron Perlman, Daniel Emilfork, Judith Vittet
A scientist in a surrealist society kidnaps children to steal their dreams, hoping that they slow his aging process.
Before the incredible films ‘Amelie’ and ‘A Very long engagement’, Jean-Pierre Jeunet did ‘The City of Lost Children’. To call it weird is euphemistically speaking to say the least. Yet, I couldn’t stop watching. The camerawork, sets, and look and feel of the film are completely unique. Not a single frame of this film was ‘normal’. Visually, this truly is unlike anything you’ll ever see, and I’m still not entirely sure if that’s a good thing.
The film did have a very good underlying theme, though, and Ron Perlman was fabulous as the film’s protagonist. There’s so much happening in the film, if you blink you’ll miss something!!
The film won awards for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, and received several other award nominations.
