The Center of Foolishness

Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered. (Proverbs 28:26)

Some people will do what they want to do, despite the counsel they receive. They will choose their own way, even though godly people or the Bible is telling them to do otherwise. This is the classic example of a fool, and this fool will not prosper. This fool will discover foolishness as a companion in life. This fool will make one foolish decision after another. A snowball of foolishness will become their lot.

How tragic a life this is!

It is one thing to be ignorant and not know the godly way. It’s another thing to have all the resources you need for living a godly life and still choose your own way.

This is the essence of narcissism. One who raises their own intellect and will to the level of lordship is living a prideful, destructive life.

It’s the kind of sin that changes angels into demons. It’s the kind of sin that led the closest of Jesus’ disciples to deny Him. It’s the kind of sin that convinces nations think they are the ultimate sovereigns.

Pride is the most anti-God sin that exists.

In his book Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis has written that, “It is pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began…Pride always means enmity – it is enmity. And not only enmity between man and man, but enmity to God…As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”

God, in His grace, has given us the ability to become wisdom and learn wisdom. For us to pretend that we have all the answers at all times about all things is the height of arrogance. It is the center of foolishness.
