The Catholic Mass: Truth vs. Error
The following list is adapted from The Gospel According to Rome by James McCarthy (pgs. 175-177):
The Catholic Church teaches the Last Supper was a sacrifice where Jesus’ blood was poured out for sins in the cup. The Bible teaches the Last Passover was a Passover meal. Jesus’ blood was poured out for our sins on the cross (I Peter 2:24).
The Catholic Church teaches the bread and wine become the real body and blood of Christ. The Bible teaches the bread and wine are symbols of the body and blood about Christ (I Corinthians 11:23-25).
The Catholic Church teaches Jesus’ body and blood exist wholly and entirely in every fragment of the wafer and wine. The Bible teaches Christ is bodily present in heaven (Hebrews 10:12-13).
The Catholic Church teaches bread and wine are heavenly food which helps one attain eternal life. The Bible teaches the bread and wine are symbols which helps one remember Christ (Luke 22:19).
The Catholic Church teaches Jesus has ordained priests to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross. The Bible teaches Jesus has ordained every believer as a holy and royal priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices (Romans 12:1; I Peter 2:5-10; Hebrews 13:15).
The Catholic Church teaches that during the Mass, the priest represents to the Father the sacrifice of Jesus. The Bible teaches Jesus presents the sacrifice of Himself to the Father once (Hebrews 9:24-28).
The Catholic Church teaches that every Mass appeased God’s wrath against sin. The Bible teaches the once-for-all sacrifice of the cross fully appeases God’s wrath against sin (Hebrews 10:12-18).
