THE CARDIGANS – Carnival (1995)

“Carnival” is a 1995 single by The Cardigans, featured on their second studio album, Life. Written by guitarist Peter Svensson and bassist Magnus Sveningsson, the song captures the band’s signature early sound: upbeat, jazzy pop with a whimsical, retro vibe, complemented by Nina Persson’s soft, airy vocals. With its bossa nova-inspired rhythm and catchy melody, “Carnival” explores themes of flirtation and emotional ambiguity, as Persson’s lyrics describe a playful but uncertain attraction.

The Cardigans are a Swedish rock band formed in 1992 in Jönköping, Sweden, known for their unique sound that blends pop, rock, and alternative elements. The original lineup consisted of Nina Persson (vocals), Peter Svensson (guitar), Magnus Sveningsson (bass), Bengt Lagerberg (drums), and Lars-Olof Johansson (keyboards). They achieved international success in the mid-1990s with their breakthrough album Life (1995) and the hit single “Lovefool,” which appeared on the Romeo + Juliet (1996) movie soundtrack.

I will never know ‘Cause you will never show Come on and love me now Come on and love me now I will never know ‘Cause you will never show Come on and love me now Come on and love me now Come on and love me now

Carnival came by my town today Bright lights from giant wheel Fall on the alleyways And I’m here by my door Waiting for you I will never know ‘Cause you will never show Come on and love me now Come on and love me now I will never know ‘Cause you will never show Come on and love me now Come on and love me now Come on and love me now

I hear sounds of lovers Barrel organs, mothers I would like to take you Down there just to make you mine In a merry-go-round I will never know ‘Cause you will never show Come on and love me now Come on and love me now I will never know ‘Cause you will never show Come on and love me now Come on and love me now

Come on and love me now Come on and love me now Come on and love me now Umm, come on and love me now Come on and love me now Come on and love me now Come on and love me now
