The Breed (2006)

Director: Nicholas Mastandrea
Starring: Michelle Rodriguez, Oliver Hudson, Taryn Manning
A group of five college kids are forced to match wits with unwelcoming residents when they fly to a “deserted” island for a party weekend.
Another slasher featuring teens for the kill. From the opening scene, the film already prepares us for what to expect.
A group of teenagers head to a beautiful island. There’s a back story as to why they’re going, but we don’t really care about that, do we? We want to see who will be the first victim. We want to see dogs, and since this is a horror, we want to see dog attacks. Aren’t humans twisted to want to see this? Then again, we can rest assure knowing this is only make believe and no dogs – or actors – were harmed.
Soon after arriving in the idyllic setting, tranquility turns to nightmare when the youngsters find themselves being stalked by a bunch of wild dogs. There are so many false scares the film could have done without. It was suspenseful enough, so we didn’t need these false scares.
The final act was nice and suspenseful, but damn these characters make stupid mistakes! Let’s face it, ‘The Breed’ does not have an award winning script, but it was indeed a thoroughly entertaining movie with plenty to go around. It has a great setting, action, adventure, gore to keep the horror junkies happy, a good dose of suspense, and also some humour in the mix.
Would I watch it again? Yes, why not?
