The Blind Side (2009)

Director: John Lee Hancock
Starring: Quinton Aaron, Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw
The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first-round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.
I have no interest in football – or any other sport for that matter. This was a big disadvantage for the movie before I even started reviewing it. Being based on fact helped even less, as I expected a tedious sports movie. The only draw card for me – sort of – was Sandra Bullock.
Well, ‘The Blind Side’ proved me wrong! I ended up loving this movie! I was never bored, and the film had my full attention from beginning to end. It was also a lot funnier than expected. (No, it’s not a comedy but there are a few very funny moments).
Sandra Bullock stars as Leigh Anne Tuohy, a successful interior designer. Her husband is Sean Tuohy, who owns a few restaurant franchises. Their children are Collins and S.J (or Sean jr.), who go to Briarcrest Christian School, where Michael Oher (or Big Mike) has just been enrolled – against the better judgment of the school staff, believing him to be academically challenged.
Michael is a gentle giant who doesn’t talk much, and doesn’t mingle with the other students – or rather, they have no interest in mingling with him. One night Leigh Anne takes pity on Michael when she sees him walking in the cold and rain. The family takes him to their home, and having nowhere else to go, Michael soon becomes a part of the family. Michael would eventually find his love for football – in part also thanks to Leigh Anne, who motivated him.
‘The Blind Side’ is an inspirational, uplifting, compassionate and humanitarian film with a strong message. I never thought I would enjoy the movie as much as I did. The performances from the entire cast was very good. 13-Year old Jae Head was awesome as S.J. Quinton Aaron also delivered a moving performance as Michael. I thought Sandra Bullock also did a fantastic job in a serious role. ‘The Blind Side’ was a pleasant surprise.
‘The Blind Side’ was a huge success, amassing $309 million on a $29 million budget. It received several accolades and won the Oscar for Best Actress (Sandra Bullock).
Would I watch it again? Maybe.
