The Big Short (2015)

Director: Adam McKay
Starring: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling
In 2006-2007 a group of investors bet against the US mortgage market. In their research, they discover how flawed and corrupt the market is.
Based on fact and keeping the plot in mind, ‘The Big Short’ is a film that would appeal mostly to Americans, and people in the banking industry. Anyone else will find it incredibly boring, slow and uninteresting. I’ve also come to the conclusion critics and those on the Academy Awards panel, are people who need to lighten up and smile once in a while.
‘The Big Short’ is undoubtedly one of the most boring films I’ve seen in a while. And if I hear the word “mortgage” again, I’m going to puke! The premise didn’t excite me one bit and for most parts I also had no idea what this movie was actually about. The film has characters sitting in suits in offices from beginning to end, and talking non-stop about nothing that interested me… Yawn…
Christian Bale once again acts with little enthusiasm, talking in a hushed, slow voice, with similar actions. He looked like someone who has just woken up after taking too many sleeping pills! (Oh, and he was awarded Best Actor! Maybe because the actual person he portrayed acted that way??). Steve Carell portrays one of the most annoying, irritating, unpleasant characters I’ve seen in a movie. Every time he was on screen, I felt like either hitting the ‘forward’ or the ‘mute’ button.
I had no joy watching this dreary movie whatsoever… ugh! On a positive note, the editing was very good.
‘The Big Short’ is a multi award winning movie, with 118 nominations, winning 37 – including the Oscar for Best Screenplay. Oh, those Americans…
Would I watch it again? Most definitely not.
