Top 10 Surprises

  1. Goldfinger (1964)

  2. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

  3. Heat (1995)

  4. Halloween (1978)

  6. Memento (2000)

  7. Django Unchained (2012)

  9. Groundhog Day

  10. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

And now, if you’re in the mood for any of the following film genres, you can check any of these bonafide classics. I’ve seen most of them and would definitely say they are worth the try.

ROMANCE

  • Return to Me (2000)

  • A Star is Born (1937)

  • The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) This one also fits under the category of war drama.

WESTERN

  • True Grit (1969)

  • Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

DRAMA

  • Dancer in the Dark (2000)

  • The Color of Money (1986)

  • Sophie’s Choice (1982)

  • Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

  • On Golden Pond (1981)

  • Short Term 12 (2013) This one is a hidden gem and it has a few big stars of today who were relatively unknown at the time, namely Brie Larsen, LaKeith Stanfield, Rami Malek, Kaitlyn Dever and John Gallagher Jr (who stars in our movie of the week)

HORROR

  • The Omen (1976)

  • Scanners (1981)

  • Night of the Living Dead (1968)

  • Nosferatu (1922) This is also a silent movie.

WAR

CHARLIE CHAPLIN

  • The Kid (1921)

  • The Gold Rush (1925) This is the one with the scene of the Tramp eating his own boot. It also has the great scene of him making his dinner rolls and forks dance.

  • City Lights (1931) Another romance movie, mixed with comedy of course.

MORE SILENT MOVIES

  • A Trip to the Moon (1902) Short

  • Safety Last (1923) When you see the scene, you know it.

  • Sherlock Jr. (1924) Buster Keaton

  • Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)  This one is also a romance where the others on this list are either comedy, action, or a combination of the two.

Steamboat Bill Jr.

Unfortunately, none of our nominees for movie of the week are available. Hopefully you’ll still get to watch them. Chazelle sure knows how to write a good screenplay.

Congratulations 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016). This is your week.

And the Oscar goes to…

Best Actress: Emma Stone as Mia in La La Land

Best Actor: JK Simmons as Terence Fletcher in Whiplash

Best Quote: “Okay, I was an asshole. I can admit that. But requesting ‘I Ran’ from a serious musician, it’s just, it’s too far.” – Ryan Gosling as Sebastian in La La Land

A big thank you, once again, for those of you who take the time to read this stuff. It’s mostly a therapeutic and creative exercise for my benefit, but it’s very much appreciated to know that others care enough to give it a read. Have a great week everyone!
