The arrogance of the 2021 wanna be, past Olympians is astounding to me.
I was going to try and be nice but then I just got annoyed at the thought of this bull shit not being called out and here’s what you get instead.
Being an Olympian is not a lifetime free pass to ” glory.”
All athletes get up in the morning and work hard. You don’t get to the Major leagues or Olympics by half-assing your training. Some gymnasts have super strength and can throw triple doubles and others use the code of points to their advantage because they know how to game the system. Working on your strengths is a perfect way to get ahead in this world and become successful but it doesn’t mean you will.
That being said just because you attempted to do this in 2008 and got hurt doesn’t mean you should get a literal free pass to a chance at Glory in an event that comes around once every 4 years. Especially when you fall on your only two events at the qualifying competition AND have the audacity to show up and swing a bar routine you admit you had never hit in training. Not even once.
You’re cute. You’re nice. Everyone loves you. You have barely been back on the scene for 2 months and you still get voted, ” The miss Congeniality ” of your sport. Congratulations but to actually have the audacity to ask for a free pass to the Qualifying competition of THE OLYMPIC GAMES after you took yourself out of the process is literally just insanity.
And now the big one. Becky Downie comes across as whiny, self-entitled baby. (Here is her ” Tweet) No sugar coating this one for me. I am sick to death of people thinking because she finally medaled in 2019 (3 YEARS AGO) after choking away the chance for like 6 years straight years means she should make an Olympic team after falling 50% of the extra chance she was given after a tragedy. It’s heartbreaking her brother died but it bears nothing in the scheme of picking an Olympic team and I can’t believe how everyone really thinks she deserves to make a 4 person Olympic team after falling or barely completing her lower level bar routine through the entire process. Don’t get me started on her mother. Her arrogance is worse than the 3 above combined. (More on that later)
I looked it up. Becky is 29 years old. She had her chance to shine and failed. She had an extra year to get consistent with her super routine and failed. Having the best score of one of the qualifying meets by a tenth or two when it’s only a 14.300 isn’t worthy of a free pass to the games… Not when the team is 4-3-3 and the rules of subbing in an alternate means any injury to a gymnast ends your Countries chance of an Olympic team medal, no matter how small that chance is.
In that “press release” Becky wants to know why she was given the extra chance. We all know why she was. It was because she lost her brother. “Performance aside” Really? How does this comment not irk everyone? There is no performance aside, Becky. Your performance was sub-par. She had 2 extra chances and you fell on one of them. Try getting a job and only doing it half the time and see how long you have that job. The reason you don’t get to try (again. You went to another Olympics) is that making an Olympic team is earned and you didn’t earn it. Even if you had hit your bar routine and been left at home. It happened because other things went into making a team. You don’t think you will ever get over being given an extra chance by your federation. Oh, the horror.
Here is the tweet by Becky’s mother. This reaks of the attitude of Gabby fans in 2016. I could have done this or I could have done that but why should I have to earn it.? Well, try being the American gymnast left home when you could win gold on an event but are left out of the conversation altogether because it’s the only event you are good at. Ashton Locklear and you should have a conversation. Oh wait! (Mic drop)
( If you agreed with me that Gabby didn’t earn her spot in 2016 and that the ends shouldn’t justify the means. Earning your spot is more important, than you might be a hypocrite in this situation if you side with Becky)
Morgan Hurd
I am not sure where I stand on Morgan Hurd being allowed to compete at Trials. Injuries happen. Riley took advantage of her “injury” and was allowed to petition to Nationals and then did her job. Morgan did not.
I see the side of people who think she should at least get a chance and I also see the side of people who think she tried and failed for whatever reason. She doesn’t deserve it. For a while, I always felt like I wanted Morgan on the team because it would suck for her to be so successful the first half of the quad only to come up short because others passed her or “Injuries” but imagine if Morgan said “Performance aside” and see how the people react.
Roast me gymternet. I’m ready for it.
DUMBEST COMMENT EVER (Sent to me by a gym fan who saw it on facebook) The team doesn’t matter. Becky could win a medal ”
