Director: Andrew Douglas

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, Jimmy Bennett

Newlyweds are terrorized by demonic forces after moving into a large house that was the site of a grisly mass murder a year before.

‘The Amityville Hororr’ is a worthy remake of the 1979 film of the same name. This version is one of my favorite horror films for a number of reasons. It is a very subtle possession tale, and far more realistic than most possession movies out there today. The mere fact that it is based on a true story makes it all that more intriguing, especially since I’m familiar with the actual events.

Ryan Reynolds is so good in the role of real-life George Lutz. His progression from ordinary guy to possessed is effective and creepy. This near-perfect horror film doesn’t rely on blood, guts and gore to keep the viewer engaged. Beware: this film contains unpredictable jump scares. I loved the set-up in the big, spooky old mansion, and the house’s history.

The entire cast is excellent. Chloë Grace Moretz is fantastic as the youngest daughter, Chelsea. Ah, yes, and then there’s Ryan Reynolds. ‘The Amityville Horror’ is a must for Reynolds fans who want to marvel at that perfect physique.

The film is fast-paced, and engaging from beginning to end, with very good editing. The nail-biting climax is intense!

‘The Amityville Horror’ was a big box office success, earning $107 million on a $19 million budget.

Would I watch it again? Absolutely.
