That’s not a movie… THAT’S a movie!

When we think of movies, we usually think of American-made ones. Before WWII, Italy was often thought of as the hub of cinema. France, Germany, and India have held their own as well over the years, especially the latter. But one country we don’t often think about is Australia, despite its huge impact on the film industry. In fact the first feature length movie ever to be released was (1906), an Australian-made western. Below are a few other contributions of which you may or may not have been aware:

ACTORS

The top 10 greatest actors to have come from Australia:

  1. Mel Gibson

  2. Chris Hemsworth

  3. Toni Collette

  4. Russell Crowe

  5. Margot Robbie

  6. Heath Ledger

  7. Nicole Kidman

  8. Hugh Jackman

  9. Cate Blanchett

HONOURABLE MENTIONS: Hugo Weaving, Errol Flynn, Eric Bana, Liam Hemsworth, Naomi Watts, Sam Worthington, Rose Byrne, Isla Fisher, Ben Mendelsohn

This was a very subjective list. I’d love to hear anyone’s take on the order.

DIRECTORS

There are many directors, though the two most popular would most likely be George Miller and Baz Luhrmann. Miller’s most famous movies would be all 5 of the Mad Max movies made so far, both Happy Feet movies, and both Babe movies. Luhrmann not only directed, but also wrote favourites like (2001), (2022), (1996), (2008), and (2014).

MOVIES

The 10 highest grossing Australian-made movies (according to GQ Australia):

  1. Crocodile Dundee II (1988)

  2. Peter Rabbit (2018)

  3. The Great Gatsby (2013)

  4. Moulin Rouge! (2001)

  5. Lion (2017)

  6. Happy Feet (2006)

  7. Elvis (2022)

  8. Babe (1995)

  9. Australia (2008)

  10. Crocodile Dundee (1986)

I love that Crocodile Dundee serves as bookends to this top ten list!

And if you’d like some recommendations, the following list was also made by GQ Australia, who took ratings from 3 websites: Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, and Letterboxd. The following had the highest of an averaged score from each site (out of 10):

The 10 highest rated Australian-made movies (highest score out of 10)

  1. The Babadook (2014), 7.8

  2. Babe (1995), 7.8

  3. The Castle (1997), 8

  4. Babyteeth (2019), 8

  5. The Piano (1993), 8.1

  6. Lion (2017), 8.1

  7. Charlie’s Country (2013), 8.1

  8. Hacksaw Ridge (2016), 8.1

  9. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), 8.2

  10. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), 8.7

(NOTE: Moulin Rouge!, Elvis, Crocodile Dundee all made the top 20 with an average score of 7.2 or higher)

Congratulations . This is your week.

Best Quote: “My return seemed to inspire and energize the neighborhood, as though it was evidence that the hard luck of life did not have to rule you. Sometimes miracles do happen.” – Dev Patel as Saroo Brierly in

For me, I’m pretty excited that George Miller has a new Mad Max movie coming out. It’s in pre-production now: .
