TEARS FOR FEARS – Year of the Knife (live)

Tears for Fears’ “Year of the Knife” is a high-energy song from their 1989 album The Seeds of Love. It is often interpreted as a commentary on societal struggles, media sensationalism, and the chaos of modern life. The song’s lyrics convey a sense of urgency and tension, using vivid, sometimes cryptic imagery that reflects the band’s dissatisfaction with the world’s escalating violence and superficiality.

“See the mountains crumbleFeel the fire go coldSummer will turn to winterLove will turn to stone

They say his famous final wordsCame from the heart of man, ohI made his bed on love deniedNow I ain’t gonna sleep tonight“

Some interpretations also see it as a response to the pressures of fame and the conflicts faced by the band, who at the time were grappling with creative and personal challenges. The track has a raw, almost live feel, influenced by rock and soul, with powerful instrumentation and vocals that amplify the sense of frustration and disillusionment in the lyrics.

Hallelujah, the king is dead. He said “Love was the knife” And now he’ll dream some magic queen might try and save his life They say his famous final words Came from the heart of the man He made his bed on love denied He played Jeckyll and Hyde ’till the day he died

Too late for the young gun To lead a simple life Too late for the young gun

(I said!) This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife

See the mountains crumble Feel the fire go cold Summer will turn to winter Love will turn to stone

They say his famous final words Came from the heart of man, oh I made his bed on love denied Now I ain’t gonna sleep tonight

Too late for the young gun To lead a simple life Too late for the young gun Sun and the moon Sun and the moon The wind And the rain

This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife

This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife This is the year of the knife (too late, too late) This is the year of the knife (too late, too late) Too late! Too late!

Too late, much too late Too late for the young gun This is the year of the knife
