TEARS FOR FEARS – Advice For The Young At Heart (1989)

“Advice for the Young at Heart” is a song by the English band Tears for Fears, taken from their 1989 album The Seeds of Love. It was released as the third single from the album in February 1990.

The song was written by Roland Orzabal and keyboardist/singer Nicky Holland. The lead vocal was sung by Curt Smith (the only track on the whole The Seeds of Love album that he sang lead vocals on).

The single only reached #89 in the US Billboard 100 but was a Top 40 hit in the UK (#36), France (#31), Canada (#25) and The Netherlands (#22), and a Top 20 hit in Ireland (#15). In 1992, when Tears for Fears released Tears Roll Down (Greatest Hits 82–92), “Advice for the Young at Heart” was re-released in Brazil, where it achieved major success as it was featured in the soundtrack of a popular soap-opera at the time, Gente Fina (1990), on Rede Globo.

While the album version was mixed by David Bascombe, the single version was mixed by Bob Clearmountain. The single mix was included on the 2020 deluxe edition of The Seeds of Love.

Advice for the young at heart Soon we will be older When we gonna make it work?

Too many people living in a secret world While they play mothers and fathers We play little boys and girls When we gonna make it work? I could be happy I could be quite naive It’s only me and my shadows Happy in our make believe Soon

And with the hounds at bay I’ll call your bluff ‘Cause it would be okay To walk on tiptoes everyday

And when I think of you and all the love that’s due I’ll make a promise, I’ll make a stand Cause to these big brown eyes, this comes as no surprise We’ve got the whole wide world in our hands

Advice for the young at heart Soon we will be older When we gonna make it work?

Love is a promise Love is a souvenir Once given Never forgotten, never let it disappear This could be our last chance When we gonna make it work? Working hour is over

And how it makes me weep ‘Cause someone sent my soul to sleep

And when I think of you and all the love that’s due I’ll make a promise, I’ll make a stand Cause to these big brown eyes, this comes as no surprise We’ve got the whole wide world in our hands

We’ve got the whole wide world in our hands We’ve got the whole wide world in our hands
