Tasso Sfanos began playing basketball at the age of three. Around 15 years later, the game is taking him to South Carolina as a signee for the University of South Carolina Beaufort Sand Sharks men’s basketball program.

“The way Coach (Ron) Fadula wants to build a family and the way he is going to push everyone on the team to get better really made me like him and his idea of building a winner at this program,” he said. Him coming from coaching IUP, one of the top PSAC and national programs, really proves that he is going to bring a lot to the team and knows a lot about winning.”

Sfanos also knows a lot about winning as his Mars Fightin Planets continue to be a force in the WPIAL and in the state come basketball season. “It means a lot to me because so many great players have come from Mars. Having the chance to represent the program and be mentioned in the same category as so many great players is a pretty cool thing.”

The Butler County product helped bring four winning seasons and two sectional titles back home to Mars in his career. Individually, he was a three-time First-Team All-Section, an All-WPIAL selection, the Butler County Player of the Year, and a Second-Team All-State selection. He also finished his career with 1,364 career points and his 703 points as a senior were the second most ever in a single season in Fightin Planets boys’ basketball history.

His senior year is one he will never forget as it brought him not just many accolades, but important moments that will remain with him forever. Nailing a buzzer beater against North Hills at home and heading to Florida for the second time will always stick out as some of his top moments so far from basketball.

In addition to his time playing for Mars, PK Flash were also vital in his development as a player. Coach Lewandowski and Coach Maddalon helped him and coached him up to fulfill a longtime dream of playing basketball in college.

Sfanos intends to major in business and hopes to open his own gym and training facility post his playing career. “I want to help out more kids and people get better at not just basketball, but other goals they have in athletics.”

In the coming months, Tasso Sfanos will be off to a new state and playing Division II basketball for a first-year program. It’s a challenge he’s ready to meet and an opportunity he’s grateful for. With support from his parents, coaches, and teammates, a dream will soon be a reality for this former WPIAL standout.
