Surface Dock 2 teardown
—–
In the spirit of the ongoing teardown series, here is the latest installment.
The new Surface Dock 2 is considerably easier to disassemble than the older model due to a simpler approach to fasten the SurflLnk cable. Key changes compared to the old dock are:
New internal edge style connector for the Lorom SurfLink cable assembly instead of Molex nanopitch
Cable assembly held in place with 2 Torx T6 screws instead of magnets and glue
Dock mainboard is ~10mm wider
Mainboard has one large EM shield instead of 4 small shields
Metal weights are held in place with screws and adhesive rather than plastic sonic welds
Realtek Audio with TRRS 3.5mm audio in/out instead of Conexant Audio with TRS 3.5mm audio out
