Sunshine (2007)

Director: Danny Boyle
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, Chris Evans
A team of international astronauts are sent on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun with a nuclear fission bomb in 2057.
‘Sunshine’ is an interesting premise and visually fantastic. Super close-up photography accentuates the feeling of being in a confined space. The film also has very good editing. The score by John Murphy was also very nice.
The film dishes up a good dose of suspense and action, and was rather exciting. ‘Sunshine’ boasts a good ensemble cast. However, the film’s major flaw was the characters. They simply don’t seem experienced or professional enough for their respective jobs. Professionals in their fields – working together for 7 years of more – should be able to work together in perfect harmony, almost synchronized. Instead, there’s always debate about who has to do what, and how, and they can’t seem to decide (or agree) on anything without it ending in confrontation.
Then there were moments when I didn’t really know what was actually happening – because I literally didn’t know and I found their actions weren’t always explained properly – as if they simply expected the audience to know what they were doing. I found the film’s final moments (unnecessarily) weird – because of unusual photography and blurred vision not used previously in the film. Yet, moments during this final were also beautiful in a way – almost spellbinding.
In closing, ‘Sunshine’ was an interesting and exciting action adventure fantasy, and I can recommend it.
‘Sunshine’ received several award nominations including Best Actor, Best British Film, Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Best Film Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Picture, Best Art Direction and Production Design…
Would I watch it again? I said I’d recommend it, not that I’d want to watch it again. Then again, maybe…
