Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

I decided to go to the must-visit Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen in Chapel Hill. I’d already been to the other Sunrise location, in Louisburg, and reviewed it here. I’d tried to go to the Chapel Hill location before, but was deterred by the line. The wait looked manageable this time, so I got in line.

Sunrise is a tiny, charming place with a single drive through window. There’s no indoor seating, alas.

As far as I could tell, there was only one person preparing food, although I might have missed someone. Perhaps someone didn’t show up for work. Since I’d just had a breakfast sandwich at Rise, I only ordered a single sausage egg and cheese biscuit (4.67 with tax), which arrived with reasonable speed.

Once again, the biscuit was wonderful, just wonderful, just as my biscuits were at the Louisburg location. Show me a better biscuit. There also was a better egg-to-sausage ratio that at the overstuffed (with egg) Louisburg location. The sausage was nicely spiced but, alas, a bit overcooked and cleaning toward the dry side. That said, I certainly will go back to Sunrise. Based on my limited experience I lean toward Louisburg, which may reopen their inside seating someday, and which has a more extensive menu (fat back, tenderloin, red hots.) But I’m quite willing — eager, really — to try Chapel Hill again. I probably should just follow the wisdom of biscuit maven David Sanders and get a plain biscuit, a sure winner, and a biscuit with just bacon. Or a biscuit with pimiento cheese, which isn’t available in Louisburg. That sounds like a combination well worth a try. Hey! If I skip Rise, I could get all three!

If you haven’t tried the Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen, or if you’ve only tried one of the locations, go now. And thank your lucky stars that you were able to eat such a biscuit.
