STING – Message In A Bottle (live) | Radio 2 in the Park (2024)

Sting performed “Message in a Bottle,” one of his iconic songs from his time with The Police, during his set at BBC Radio 2 in the Park 2024 in Preston. His performance at the event included a mix of solo hits and classics from The Police, such as “Every Breath You Take,” “Roxanne,” and “So Lonely,” in addition to “Message in a Bottle.” This setlist balanced Sting’s solo career highlights and nostalgic Police hits, resonating with fans who appreciate his blend of rock and pop across decades.

The lyrics of “Message in a Bottle” tell the story of someone feeling isolated, “sending out an S.O.S” by tossing a message into the sea, hoping for connection. The chorus famously repeats:

“I’ll send an S.O.S. to the world / I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle.” (Sting)

Later on the poetic voice in the lyrics comes to the realization that he is “not alone at being alone”: many others feel the same, creating a sense of shared loneliness.

“Walked out this morning, I don’t believe what I sawHundred billion bottles washed up on the shoreSeems I’m not alone at being aloneHundred billion castaways, looking for a home” (Sting)

Everybody is sending an “S.O.S. to the world,” but there is no one there to receive it. The world is empty. “There is an infinite amount of hope in the universe … but not for us.” (Franz Kafka)

Just a castaway, an island lost at sea, oh Another lonely day with no one here but me, oh More loneliness than any man could bear Rescue me before I fall into despair, oh

I’ll send an S.O.S to the world I’ll send an S.O.S to the world I hope that someone gets my I hope that someone gets my I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle, yeah Message in a bottle, yeah
