Still Looking?
I wanted to write a little something on DIII recruiting in the midst of the Coronavirus. A number of Potential Student Athletes (PSA) would typically use this time to do on campus visits or have potential schools evaluate them at tournaments. With schools closing their doors for the time being and club volleyball suspending action, what has been normal in the past is impossible today. I’m not sure there is a way to determine if a PSA is the right fit for a coach or the existing team without getting to meet in person but this doesn’t mean that your recruiting efforts should stop. In fact, I would wager that this is a great time to reengage coaches via email and with video links. I mean their lives have been turned upside down, too, so I’m sure anything that leads to normalization for them would be welcome.
One of the people/sites that helped me during my daughter’s recruitment was “The College Volleyball Coach”. As luck would have it the coach, Matt Sonnichsen, seems to have reengaged with his website in the last few days. There is a ton of good information from past years that still applies on the site today and he’s a great resource for recruiting questions now. I also have a link that relates to Recruitment Videos and some dos and don’ts in case you are still putting together video.
If you are a worried PSA or parent of a PSA, just know that there are still LOTS of schools looking for talent. It’s going to be a tougher process but you shouldn’t kill any dreams because of the virus. All you have to do is look at the 2020 Recruit list I have on the site to see that there are still a number of schools with openings (although in no way do I believe I have all of the recruits for each school). Also remember that the list only covers the West. There are also 7 other regions (not to mention other divisions), but you should only consider them if rejected by every West school. (That was a joke…sort of.)
Best of luck to all of those still looking.
