Mr. Bungle is a group of metalheads whose influences stretch way beyond heavy metal and hard rock music. They draw on a myriad of musical sources and influences, from classical music to gypsy, from film soundtrack to electronica, from jazz to ska and funk. They have been joined by one and the same belief: that it’s possible to be all that simultaneously. Mr. Bungle’s musical identity is a proteiform non-identity. They are a non-identitarian, non-binary, genre-defying band. A bizarre, uncanny, sublime creature.

Mr. Bungle’s “Ars Moriendi” is one of the standout tracks from their 1999 album, California. The title translates from Latin as “The Art of Dying”, referencing medieval Christian texts on how to die well, which is a fitting title for this dark, intense, and musically complex piece. The song captures Mr. Bungle’s unique ability to blend genres in a way that feels both theatrical and chaotic.

“Ars Moriendi” draws heavily on Middle Eastern melodies and instrumentation, combined with rapid shifts into surf rock, heavy metal, and carnival music. The song’s structure is unpredictable, with sudden tempo changes, discordant guitar riffs, and intricate percussion. Mike Patton’s vocal performance is theatrical and dynamic, ranging from operatic passages to rapid-fire lyrics, and even guttural, almost chanting segments that add to the song’s haunting quality.

Thematically, “Ars Moriendi” has a surreal, almost spiritual vibe, hinting at concepts of death and transcendence. The song’s eclectic and frenetic style exemplifies Mr. Bungle’s avant-garde approach and is widely praised for its complex musicianship and genre-blending. It’s a cult favorite among fans and showcases the band’s knack for bending musical conventions while creating an immersive, almost cinematic experience.
