Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)

Director: Jeff Fowler

Starring: Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Lee Majdoub

Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance.

Oh, what have they done? Everything I loved about the first movie, is gone. If you like the video game and CGI-heavy Hollywood superhero movies, chances are you’re going to love this. There’s just so much so much so much so much so much so much CGI here…this might as well have been a game or an animated film. Don’t get me wrong, I do like CGI, but this much…

And then there were three. Not only is this the third film in the franchise, but now there are three protagonists as well: Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. Come to think of it, there’s three antagonists also: Dr Robotnik, his Grandfather Gerald Robotnik, and Shadow. Tom and Maddie are still here and although they have bigger parts than in ‘Sonic 2’, they mostly serve as comic relief.

Speaking of comic relief, the humour is a lot more slapstick here. And with all the cliched humour, cliched action sequences and the cliched inclination to cause as much damage as possible, ‘Sonic 3’ becomes just another Hollywood superhero movie in the vein of every other Hollywood superhero movie out there. Yawn, already, yawn.

Just like ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, ‘Sonic 3’ is so self-indulgent that I almost stopped watching even before the halfway mark. I think I should have. Oh, wait, no, then I would have missed the ‘Galvanize’ dance scene. Now that truly was hilarious, and the absolute best part of the movie!!

I guess I should probably lighten up and enjoy the movie for what it is, but it just felt like they had a bunch of (supposedly funny) ideas and decided to cram them all into this one movie. Even the attempts at satire mostly falls flat. Or maybe its just me, I don’t know, I just found the film very annoying. Maybe this is also partly because I enjoyed the first film so much, which was a lot more relatable, and definitely had more emotion and depth.

And Gerald Robotnik wants to destroy an ENTIRE PLANET because of what happened to ONE GIRL!! Seriously, could they not have given him better motivation? Oh, whatever, I’m just so done with Hollywood superhero movies… I didn’t like this.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ is a box office success, and already earned $424 million on a budget of $122 million. And yup, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ is coming…

Would I watch it again? No.
