After a recent listen to this song, I felt it was time to share my opinion on it. We Ball comes off of Meek Mill’s 2017 album, Win & Losses, which will officially become three years old on July 21.

The instrumental and Meek Mill’s intro giving his respects to his friends that got killed immediately sets the mood for We Ball. The vocal sample is a major key to making the instrumental as emotional as it is.

Meek Mill and Young Thug each have a verse and rap about friends they lost due to ghetto violence and the pain they deal with as a result. Both say how they use drugs to cope with the trauma. It’s different a angle than what mainstream Hip-Hop normally uses for drug use.

Meek Mill’s use of autotune was a wise idea and it adds even more emotion to his performance. My favorite line from his verse was “Three felonies, ain’t graduate, no I am not your role model.” The line is extremely honest as many people expect a public figure to be someone kids can look up to.

The song gets elevated another level with Young Thug’s verse. His unique vocal delivery effectively conveys his emotions. The opening lines of his verse features the most devastating lyrics of the entire song. He says “When they killed my n***a, I seen the footage on the tape/Man I must’ve threw up everything I ever ate.”

Young Thug caps off the song by keeping a positive attitude by repeating the phrase “f**k it, we ball”, which means that he will overcome these obstacles. This verse is one of Young Thug’s best to date as he’s not know for having introspective lyrics.

We Ball not featuring a hook makes you focus on the lyricism. That along with Meek Mill and Young Thug’s contributions and the instrumental is why I grade We Ball an A.
