No question about it: people around the world like to eat out. And many do on a regular basis, at fast food places, fine dining locations, food trucks, street vendors and everything else in between. According to the NRA (no, not THAT NRA!), the National Restaurant Associationindicates that by 2025, 1.7 million new restaurant jobs will be created. Statistics a couple of years ago indicated that in the fall of 2012, there were 4,442more restaurants in the USA than in the fall of 2011.

There is a lot of hype about how many restaurants open and fail fairly quickly, although no one seems to be in agreement as to how many. But, anyone who, like me, has watched “Restaurant Impossible”, “Restaurant Makeover”, “Bar Rescue”, or “Mystery Diners”, among others, will often cringe at the state of some eating establishments. Kitchens that haven’t been cleaned in months (“I just cleaned that last week”), rodent and cockroach infestations, food contamination, food and safety violations galore. The list goes on and on. It’s enough to make you want to go home and cook!

It appears that Japan has the highest density of restaurants, per capita, with 1 restaurant for every 266 people (2010), which is apparently twice as many restaurants per capita in the USA. But, with all of those restaurants out there around the globe, why do so many fail? Bad management? Bad employees? Bad food? All of the above?

Perry Group International conducted a study of restaurants and concluded that most restaurants close during their first year of operation. According to their survey, 70% of those that make it past the first year close their doors in the next three to five years. 90% of the restaurants that are still operating past the five-year mark will stay in business for a minimum of 10 years (the date of this survey is unknown).

I took a cruise around the internet recently to find photos of restaurants and their food, which I’ve shared below. Be prepared to be amazed, shocked and disgusted! Like I said, some of these places are truly cringe-worthy! Forget eating out:go home and drag out those dusty cookbooks!
