Skenes Starts for Final Time during 2024 Season

S. Samek

It’s the last Paul Skenes day of the 2024 season. This time he starts against the New York Yankees. How will he do against the American League East division’s top team? Can he add to his resume in the chase for the rookie of the year award?

It was a short outing just 23 pitches. Granted that did get Skenes through two innings scoreless. He didn’t allow a hit, or a walk and struck out three batters. he threw 17 of his 23 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 1.96.

He would then be relieved by Mike Burrows, who is making his Major League debut. Burrows is the 16th-ranked Pirates prospect currently. He was also recently named as one of nine Pirates prospects headed to the 2024 Arizona Fall League. He would pick up his first Major League win after pitching 2 1/3 innings.

The Pirates would then go on to win the game 9-4 thanks in part to five home runs. That gives them a 76-85 record for the season. They try and end the season on a high note with a sweep against the Yankees tomorrow afternoon.
