In 1990, Sinéad O’Connor and Roger Waters collaborated on a memorable performance of “Mother,” a song from Pink Floyd’s 1979 album The Wall, during the Berlin Wall concert held on July 21, 1990. This massive concert, known as “The Wall – Live in Berlin,” was organized by Waters as a commemoration of the recent fall of the Berlin Wall and became a symbol of hope and change. The event took place in Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, in front of an audience of more than 350,000 people, with millions more watching via broadcast.

“Mother” is one of the iconic tracks from The Wall, a concept album by Pink Floyd that explores themes of isolation, control, and psychological trauma. The song is a dialogue between a mother and her son, reflecting themes of overprotectiveness and societal repression. Waters wrote the song as part of the album’s overarching narrative about a character named Pink, who builds a psychological “wall” as a defense against the pains of life.

Sinéad O’Connor brought her powerful and emotional voice to this performance, delivering a haunting interpretation of the lyrics. Her performance was marked by her distinctive style, blending vulnerability with strength, which added depth to the song’s themes of protection and confinement.

The concert was staged less than a year after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. For Waters, who had written The Wall as a commentary on psychological barriers, the event took on added symbolic meaning as a celebration of breaking down not only physical but also ideological walls.

The concert remains one of the most celebrated live performances of The Wall, and O’Connor’s collaboration with Waters on “Mother” is often highlighted as one of its most memorable moments.
