Sinister (2012)

Director: Scott Derrickson

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance

Washed-up true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt finds a box of super 8 home movies that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose work dates back to the 1960s.

This was more disturbing than scary and one you probably shouldn’t watch alone because of the unsettling premise. I found it interesting, albeit very disturbing, until the final twist, which ruined the film in a way as everything that happened seemed a waste of time (not from a watching point of view but from the protagonist’s point of view).

The film had some great scenes and also some scenes I simply could not watch.

‘Sinister’ was a huge commercial success, earning nearly $78 million on a $3 million budget.
