Should We Care About Justice?
“Unequal weights and unequal measures are both alike an abomination of the Lord.” (Prov 20:10)
God hates injustice. We should be concerned about justice, because God is a just God. Moses told the people in the wilderness, objects of oppression in Egypt, about this just God – “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing” (Deut 10:17-18).
King David, who was beloved for his compassion to his people and commitment to protect them from their enemies said of God, “I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy” (Ps 140:12). God condemns injustice.
And since God is a just God, we must do what we can to model His desire for justice. To do justice is a command in Scripture – “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause” (Isa 1:17). We should do justice because God does justice and is concerned for justice.
We cannot afford to not talk about social justice for 2 reasons: (1) There is too much injustice in the world, and (2) Justice is near to the heart of God. There should be no debate about whether Christians want justice. We should love and try to alleviate unjust burdens on people. We must be burdened by those who are truly oppressed and abused.
Biblical justice – the way God executes justice – doesn’t encourage people to look for others to blame for their cause. God simply steps into a situation where someone has been wrongfully harmed and God judges. Why? Because God judges the sinner. God is Judge.
The ultimate way we do justice is by following Micah’s example of preaching judgment on those who are unjust and making sure that we are treating people fairly. Being salt and light (Matt 5:13) – showing the Gospel’s transforming power – will change people before BLM, CRT, or any other related organization can ever hope to.
