Shealy’s Barbecue in Leesville, South Carolina

July 2, 2014:

Shealy’s barbecue in Leesville is really, really good. It definitely is worth a visit if you are anywhere near Columbia or Augusta. Or Greenville. The meat is moist and flavorful, the perfect merger of pork and smoke. They serve buffet-style, which seems the norm in SC, and it comes gently sauced with either SC mustard-based sauce or NC vinegar based sauce. You can — and should — get both.

The buffet offers many additional choices, and I highly recommend the baby lima beans and the fried chicken. And the banana pudding. The green beans were ok, but the macaroni and cheese was weird. I did not try the hash (I’m not a big fan) or the brunswick stew, or the cream gravy which was right next to it. Life is full of choices, and I went with the fried chicken.

As I say, this place has excellent barbecue. Nancy, who favors Alabama barbecue and is not big on the North and South Carolina styles, liked it a lot. She also spoke highly of the fried chicken.

Thanks to Joe for the recommendation.
