Shared Malt Musing: Beer Equality: Addendum

Odd coincidence. I did an article a while back about a Guardian article on the beer scene and how it can be made more open to women. My main suggestion being to ask actual women rather than assuming men know better than women what they want.

Anyway, it seems Brewdog saw the same Guardian article, and asked some of their female staff what they thought. So since someone did exactly what I had asked for I thought I’d best link to it.

It’s obviously concentrated on the Brewdog experience, but was still nice to see

A comment that seemed interesting to me was “Since craft beer has begun taking over the UK  I think the popularity of this style of beer has risen at the same time between both male and females, so there are no stereotypes yet in place. “

A few people had mentioned there was less of a stereotype for beer in USA with the craft beer scene and if we are getting similar here in the UK that’s a pretty promising sign.

Anyway to round off a tale if I may from the USA showing that it isn’t all perfect over there. We were in a fine bar in Baton Rouge where they had a berry wheat beer which looked nice. As I ordered the waitress instantly went “Oh that’s a popular beer with the women” then instantly tried to backtrack as my mates laughed. Apparently she had the inverse problem a few days before when some women had ordered London Porter to which she had said “Oh all the blokes like that one”, to similar results.

The beer was very tasty, decent well made weisse with the berries adding a nice extra touch, if it’s popular with women then those women have good taste, oh and everyone should be free to drink London Porter.

Ok, it’s a minor tale but it’s all I had to round off the article.

Enjoy your drink, whatever style it may be and to whatever gender you may belong.
