Serj Tankian Yearns for ‘Unity and Harmony’ on New Armenian-Language Song ‘Amber’ | Rolling Stone

Title for new track — featuring celebrated Armenian singer Sevak Amroyan — is pronounced “ahm-be’r” and translates to “clouds”

Serj Tankian (born August 21, 1967) is an Armenian-American singer, musician, and songwriter. He is best known as the lead vocalist, primary lyricist, keyboardist, and occasional rhythm guitarist of heavy metal band System of a Down, which was formed in 1994.

System of a Down’s Serj Tankian channels a message of “unity and harmony” on his new song, “Amber,” which he sings in his native Armenian language.

“Amber” — which is pronounced “ahm-be’r” and means “clouds” in Armenian — is a plaintive folk song filled with piano, strings, and additional vocals from the celebrated Armenian singer Sevak Amroyan. The track also arrives with a music video, directed by Hrag Yedalian, that finds Tankian and Amroyan performing the song as a young boy (Darren Chilingirian) flips through a sketchbook with handwritten phrases and illustrations that refer back to the song’s lyrics. Eventually, the boy begins to crumble the pages and throw them on the ground, and at the end of the video, it’s revealed that the scrapped pages have taken the shape of a map of Armenia and the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabagh.

Tissue covered mountains We miss you We miss you Our stabbed and wounded land We miss you We miss you Agreements can be altered We are capable We are capable Lost piano under my hand We carry guns We carry guns

Harmony We miss you

Agreements can be altered We are capable We are capable Our stabbed and wounded land We miss you We miss you

Harmony We miss you Harmony We miss you

I’m looking for your faces from the sky But I do not see through the clouds

Clouds Clouds Clouds I seek your mountains from the sky I seek your rivers from the sky I’m looking for your faces from the sky I seek your mountains from the sky I seek your rivers from the sky I seek from the sky

I seek your mountains from the sky I am looking for your faces from the sky

Tissue covered mountains We miss you We miss you Agreements can be altered We are capable We are capable
