Selection Day (- 2) News & Notes
I’ve been adding some rambling notes into my Match Day posts but thought I would give an overall picture of where the DIII nations stands right now. If you remember, I posted a first look at the possible 20 at-large teams. I can’t begin to tell you how brave this was of me to be the first person in the world to take a stab at the at-large teams*.
* Maybe not brave. Stupid? And I have no clue if it was the first, but I’d like to think so.
Well things have changed so here’s a quick rundown of the conference tournaments and changes to the at-large teams.
Hunter won their tournament and will represent the New York region in the NCAA tournament.
Pacific Lutheran (West) won their conference and gets their automatic bid.
On the down side, Farmingdale State was the #1 seed in their tournament but have lost. They were not ranked so this will not impact the 20 at-large bids.
Carnegie Mellon lost in the UAA but the remaining teams (Emory and Wash-St. Louis) were expected to get an at-large. Now it means Carnegie Mellon will take their spot. Maybe this hurts fellow Mid-Atlantic schools like Muhlenberg or Swarthmore or Scranton but Carnegie Mellon shouldn’t have to wait to long for selection, which then gets us to those teams.
The back half of the Midwest is crazy and UW-Eau Claire may have lost their way out of the tournament by not making their finals. I had them as a bubble team getting in. Look for Carthage to get a Midwest spot now.
Vassar was a questionable #1 seed in the New York region and losing early in their tournament has to kill their chances. Clarkson might be the team in NY if they get an at-large at all.
UTT struggled in the ASC tournament and killed their chances of making the tournament. The #8 West RAC spot will now go to La Verne (also struggling) or maybe UTD if they win the ASC. Regardless, the best hope of 8 West teams is with UTD or Cal Lu winning their tournaments.
Obviously the main thing to watch for today/tomorrow are the tournaments where a ranked team is the #1 seed but gets bounced by non-ranked teams. The selection committee then has a huge decision on whether to give an at-large bid to that bounced team meaning the overall at-large list shrinks (in a sense).
