Saturday, September 1 Match Day

Update:  Another slow update day as I’ll be at CMS watching matches. McMurry wins this morning and is now 3-0. Their biggest test comes up against Randolph-Macon in just a bit.

McMurry takes the first set but is down in the second. And they drop the second set, but are up in the third. A dogfight of a match that could go 5-sets.

Trinity taking on UW-Stevens Point and look good early. And they take set 1. Trinity using a different libero than I expected. Mullens played DS and Lin starts at libero. I had Mullens on the preseason All-Region team. I think I’m jinxing players!

McMurry takes set 3 (up 2-1) and ETBU is 1-1 with Nebraska Wesleyan.

Heading off to CMS now…things will get slow for me now. (But more fun.)

CMS is struggling but manage to beat Brandeis 3-2. Every match this season for CMS has gone 5.

Don’t sleep on Redlands. Something is brewing there.

Getting my first look at Chapman and I thought they would be helped by a couple of Transfers. But it’s a number of really good freshmen that are doing it. Currently playing #14 Carthage and it’s 1-1. Carthage ends up winning in 4 sets.

I didn’t get to see the Poets play but not a good day for Whittier.

Ouch, guys. Just ouch. More thoughts tomorrow, but Southwestern is rebuilding and not reloading this year. Lots of talent but they are young. CMS sweeps Southwestern and the games weren’t that close.

Most matches are listed. I still need to add some box scores. May happen late tonight.

Random Thoughts:

Not as many ranked teams going at it against each other today as yesterday. Still, there are some good ones.

Randolph-Macon/McMurry is one of those matches you don’t want to lose or have someone in your region lose. But, Randolph-Macon is a good team that should be fighting for an at-large bid come November. Take them down.

Trinity plays four really good out-of-region teams this weekend although only one is ranked (if I remember correctly). All could be fighting for at-large bids. Go Tigers!

Southwestern and Carthage is a ranked match of interest…one of three on the day. Millikin/Pacific Lutheran and then CMS and Southwestern are the others.

Whittier has IWU at the Emory tournament. Given that IWU lost to UTT, this should be a win for the Poets.

St. Thomas/Colorado College is probably the Tigers toughest match of the weekend. I don’t see them losing this at home. A nice 3-0 beat down could also be in the cards despite St. Thomas being a very good team.

Pacific Lutheran/Puget Sound in a non-conference conference match to start the year. They do this a lot, it seems. Still strange to me.

My schedule for today looks like just hanging out at CMS for a lot of good matches including Southwestern playing Carthage and CMS.
